Starting a Few More Seeds
This morning I started a few more seeds: 3 Burpee’s Fordhook Zucchini seeds, 5 Super Red Cabbage seeds (I bought these at DeHoff’s in Alliance), 5 Hale’s Best Cantaloupe seeds (I know it’s late, figured I’d give it a shot, I’m planting them on my front hillside that a zone warmer than the rest of my lot), and 5 Saffron summer squash seeds. I’m hoping the zucchini and squash will be ready for a late summer harvest. I recently read about starting a few more plants in early July, so when the plants that are producing start slowing down you still have a few plants at peak for a heavier harvest later in the season (we’ll see how that works out!). I’m trying to do a better job tracking what I start and when I start them (part of the reason for starting this blog). I also need to label my plants better, so here’s what I’m doing now.

Great Gardening Books: Living Seasonally
While reading through Designing the New Kitchen Garden: An American Potager Handbook, the Gardens at North Hill were featured in the book. I remember thinking, “Wow, I’d like to see their gardens.” Then I found out that there was a book about the gardens at North Hill. Living Seasonally: The Kitchen Garden and the Table at North Hill
is truly a fantastic read! I enjoyed every single page. Joe and Wayne do a fantastic job describing seasonal living. The writing was fantastic, it didn’t read like a normal gardening book. It is more of a biography of a garden. The book was filled with advice on which kinds of plants do well in a cool climate garden and tips about how to get specific things to grow well. I loved that they included a lot of information about their animals (from Scottish Highland Cows, to tiny Bantam hens). It truly was a wonderful read. I’m going to put it on my wish list of books I would like to add to my gardening library. I’m sure I’ll be reading it again soon.
Endless Beauty
I love hydrangeas, therefore, I have many different kinds growing in my gardens. This is one of my Endless Summer Hydrangeas.
They do so well here in Northeastern Ohio, I’m always guaranteed some beautiful blooms throughout the summer. I planted this hydrangea 2 years ago, it looked good last year, but boy does it look fantastic this year. It’s just polluted with blooms.
I’m excited because it will be blooming all summer long (I suppose that’s why they call it Endless Summer)! I love that the blossoms come out purple and change to pink, this blossom is halfway through the change.
The Pumpkins are Growing!
I checked on my pumpkin vine today and boy has it grown a ton! Sadly, one of the little pumpkinettes didn’t make it through all the rain we had, but at least one is still doing well on that vine! It’s as big as a softball! Below you can see it’s size now and it’s size 10 days ago, when it was the size of a large marble.
Happy 4th of July!
We are very patriotic here at Chiot’s Run, our flag is up spring, summer, and fall. Nothing complements a nice garden like the Red, White & Blue!
