Candles, Cookies, and Presents
I was busy all day yesterday getting ready for the my oldest niece’s birthday party, which she decided was going to be a princess tea party. I was in charge of making the cake, which I decided would be fun to make small individual cakes that looked like petit fours (my sister still made a regular cake to put candles on). I decorated them with lavender from the garden, perfectly elegant for a ladies’ tea (the icing was colored with wild blackberries, nothing artificial about that)!
I spent the weekend making her gift, which was a colorful tutu. Since she’s getting interested in ballet she thought it was great, along with the ballet slippers complete with laces.
I picked some flowers from the garden to decorate the table, and my sister got out her best china for all the little girls to use. All the little girls arrived in their frilliest dresses ready for an evening of fun. After several princess themed crafts, they enjoyed eating all the tea snacks which my niece picked out. The menu consisted of: cookie press cookies, little smokies in a blanket, mini muffins, mini tea sandwiches, pumpkin rolls, cake and peppermint tea. Now that’s a menu!!!
It was a fun evening for all involved. The little girls really enjoyed having a tea and the crafts were a big hit.
I have many fond memories of birthday parties when I was growing up. I think this is a party she will remember for a lifetime, have you ever seen such happy little girl?
Any fun, non-garden related events you’ve enjoyed attending recently?
The girl next door turned three yesterday, as a matter of fact. She had her party on Saturday, and it was quite a bit of fun. Her father comes from Mexico, so it was very interesting to see how they celebrate birthdays, and they have a great song for whacking the pinata. She had a princess-themed party, but it swung more on the Disney side. Very cute though. Watching two and three year old kids trying to hit a pinata was a sight worth seeing.

Oh yes, I love hispanic parties. Since I grew up in South America I attended many of those growing up! They’re so much fun.
Hannah had a piñata as well, that looked like a teapot, but she didn’t want to break it.

You’re the coolest aunt ever.
We went to an Oktoberfest celebration last weekend. It’s an annual event held by a man names Hans who immigrated here from Germany when he was 12. He has this huge party in his barn every year, with beer, food, and a German band. Obviously, I didn’t get any of the beer, but there were lots of brownies and chicken dancing, so the fun was not diminished in the least for me.

Can you do a Tutu turtorial? I am sure I could make one, if only I knew how. My oldest DD (11) is making a princess dress, fairy wings, crown and jewelry for her cousins Christmas gift (her little baby cousin is 3 and she adores dress up) I thing adding a tutu would be fun.

It’s actually very easy, all you need is tulle cut into strips twice as long as you want the tutu to be. Then you sew a loop of elastic (I used fairly wide elastic, about 3/4-1 inch. Then you fold the tulle in half, loop the tulle around the elastic and pull the ends through the loop and tighten.
Here’s an image I found that explains how to tie them, I used the method on the left:

Looks like it was a great party. I know my wife and I are excited to be able to celebrate our daughter’s parties like this as she gets older (currently 10 months old).

How fun, I remember having a tea party with some friend’s, a dear friend of my Mom’s helped with it but she was killed in a car accident several years ago though! But I have fond memories of it though and we decorated hats and wore our finest dresses, some were our dress-up dresses.

My youngest daughter turned 3 today :-) She’s Mega Mindy, although she’s wearing her princess tutu… Her first reaction to the festive living room: ‘Ohhhh, what a big party!!!’ Heart melting :-)
