Quote of the Day: Oliver Herford

December 12th, 2010

I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December
A magical thing
And sweet to remember.

We are nearer to Spring
Than we were in September,
I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December.

– Oliver Herford, I Heard a Bird Sing

We put out a bird feeder in the winter, we really enjoy watching the birds come. We’ve learned to identify all the different ones that come to our feeder. It sure helps get through those long dark winter months. I also notice more birds in the garden throughout the summer when we feed during the winter months.

Do you feed the birds around your gardens?

I usually do feed the birds in my garden although last year I had lots of volunteer sunflowers some of which I let grow. I haven’t filled my feeders yet because there was a bear cruising the neighborhood looking for a free supper. It would be denned up by now so I’ll fill the feeder today.
I love your photos with the cardinals. Beautiful in their simplicity. I do not have Cardinals since I don’t have the type of cover they like..

I love that one too, that’s why I chose it for the December 2011 image on my calendar. It took me a few weeks of watching & waiting to get it.

Love the photos. Cardinals always look so beautiful in the winter. I put feeders out every winter, but we’re now living further north than ever before and we don’t seem to get cardinals here. I do miss them.

I have cardinals too. And BTW…facebook’s “My Year in Status” app that harvests segments of your status reports and makes a “scrapbook page” is using your Chiot’s run bird on a branch graphic.

We are in Summer here in South Africa, and I LOVE to feed the birds. We have loads, and to sit and watch them is one of my favourite things to do!! Thanks so much for sharing your photos, they are stunning :)

    Beautiful photos. I’m jealous-you got a chickadee—just sitting there.
I have THOUSANDS of photos of empty perches or blurs of wings. They never seem to sit still!!!!

I put out a bird feeder last year, and I’ve found that I LOVE watching them through the winter. I noticed that I kept seeing a male and female cardinal together. I wondered if they stayed a pair, and after some quick internet research, I was delighted to learn that they mate for life, and often raise their babies together. My husband and I have named them “Mr. and Mrs. Cardinal.”
