Displaying All Those Cards
Everyone has their own way in which they display all those holiday cards they get from friends and family. For the longest time I didn’t display them, I simply set them in a pile on my coffee table. Last year I taped them to the posts on my stairway, but they kept falling down. This year I decided to put all those clothes pins to work that aren’t being used since it’s cold outside.
I have been pinning all of my cards into the garland that I put on the banister. We have a fairly short banister, so I think when this is filled (which it almost is now, photos were take last week) I’ll move on to putting the cards in that garland above the sliding glass doors.
I have to admit, this way of displaying cards is growing on me. I might continue doing this unless see something better. Tucking them in the tree would be nice, as would bringing a branch in to pin them on. I’m sure there are endless ways to display cards that I’ve never even thought of.
How do you display all those holiday cards you get in the mail?

We tape them up, over, and across the door jamb leading into the living room. This is always how we did it growing up, and I still do it now.
In the bottom photo, with the gingerbread men, is that a nativity made out of cookies? I’d love to know more about that!

Yes it is, this is my mom’s Christmas card, I believe she got the photo from someone on Flickr. I’ll tell her to post a link for you.

Thank you! That is really cool! I love nativities!

Me too, I might guy this set as well. I’d love to have a gingerbread nativity on my table every year!

I used to but have misplaced our card display-er. It was an old, large tomato juice can, top and bottom removed, and then red/white/green variegated yarn wrapped around and around and around (in the top, out the bottom vertically) all the way around. Simple and festive and with space in the center to put something else decorative (like a small poinsettia). To display the cards you slip one between a strand or two of yarn until the fold of the card is resting against the can and the “flaps” of the card fan out – eventually like a child’s drawing of the sun.

I think my favorite way to display the cards that we get is to tuck them in the boughs of the Christmas tree. With a young child, I haven’t put out my good decorations for a couple years and only use lights and a few unbreakable balls to decorate the tree. The cards add festivity and help me to remember all of our special friends each time I look at the tree.

This is a good idea! I stick mine on the fridge, but then I always run out of room/magnets. I was trying to think of what else to do with them. Now I think I might run outside and dig out a branch that we cut off from the Christmas tree then pin the cards too it!

Is your banister garland real? It looks really nice, but I was wondering with a wooden banister is a real garland does any damage (sap and such). We have a banister I would love to decorate. Mine will have to be fake since I can’t touch the real stuff and with it on the banister I would be touching it alot.

Yes it is real, I made it with the pine boughs that I got from the tree farm. I don’t have much trouble with sap, I saw 1 or 2 drops on the floor after I made the garland (I made it on the living room floor). The drops came right up with my Sal Suds Sal Suds floor cleaner I make.

I don’t get as many as I used to so I’m not sure what I’ll do this year. One year I hung a wide ribbon down almost the entire length of the wall, and attached the cards to it, so I had this sort of cascade of Christmas cards. It was nice.

Your garland is so pretty, Susy! The natural greenery always cheers me. I had my husband take some fencing wire and frame it out to make a wall hanging for my Christmas Cards; and I also use clothespins to attach them (you can see my post this week on my blog). I probably should add some pine boughs to the top this week when company arrives so it looks a little softer and cheery.

Your garland looks wonderful. I can smell it, really I can. Growing up we taped cards around door frames. That would spill over the the mantel and then along a half-high wall that divided the living room from the hall into the bedrooms. there was usually a garland of some type with other decorations on the half-wall so the cards hanging down fit in well. I am a bit un-decorated this year, so the cards are sitting on the kitchen table where we go through them when they arrive. Sincerely, Emily
