Quote of the Day: Vita Sackville-West

August 21st, 2011

“The man who has planted a garden feels that he has done something for the good of the world.”

Vita Sackville-West

I really enjoy visiting beautiful gardens like Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello in Charlottesville, VA.

P.S. DuPont’s Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA.

F.A. Seiberling’s Stan Hywet in Akron, OH.

There’s something quite inspiring about these old gardens that have survived for years. My gardens will never be this vast or ornate, but I can glean interesting details from them when I visit. I certainly appreciate those that spent some of their fortunes building gardens that we can still enjoy today.

What’s your favorite garden to visit?

Q is for ____________

August 20th, 2011

QUIRKY – this work describes me well, I’m definitely very quirky. I’m odd, different, distinct, and unique.

QUESTIONING – I like to question how things are make, how to do thing, why things happen. This keeps me learning new things, and delving into new areas. It keeps me from becoming complacent on political issues and it keeps my mind active and healthy.

QUICK – I’m very proficient at a lot of things and I can get them done quickly. This is one reason I can accomplish a lot in my day. As a result I can be quite impatient with myself if I don’t know how to do something or with others when they don’t do things as quickly as I’d like them to.

QUIET – for the most part. Although I can be loud at times. I also really appreciate quiet and lack of noise.

QUOTES – I love quotes, which is why we have Sunday quotes here on the blog. When I read I always have a notebook or my computer handy so I can copy down quotes. I have quotes written on note cards on my fridge and by my desk.

What words/phrases describe you that start with a Q?

P is for ______________

PRACTICAL – I’m as practical as can be. I have a hard time doing things and spending my money on things that aren’t needed.

PONYTAIL – because I’m so practical, my hair is always in a pony tail. I let it grow long, cut it and donate it every 2 years. It’s practical because I don’t have to spend time drying and styling or spend money getting my hair cut.

PHOTOGRAPHY – something I’ve been getting into over the past couple years. I find it’s a great creative outlet and a great way to have a visual journal of my life. I love looking back over the photos of my gardens in previous years to see how much they have evolved over time.

PICKLE LOVER – yep I have 5 gallons of fermented dill pickles in my fridge.

PERFECTIONIST – this is definitely a good and bad trait. Good because it makes me strive for the best, bad because is can lead to frustration. I try to keep it in check and make sure I’m not spending too much time and frustrating myself by trying to make things too perfect.

PHONE AVERTED – I HATE talking on the phone. The invention of e-mail has been a wonderful thing for people like me. I love being able to take time to think through what I’m going to say and to do it in my own time. I feel like e-mail saves me lots of time.

O is for ____________

August 18th, 2011

OPTIMIST – Even though I can be a bit cynical about certain things, I’m an optimist about most other things.

ORGANIC – But not really in the traditional sense of the word. I’m kind of beyond organic because I believe organic has been watered down by corporate involvement.

OLD FASHIONED – I definitely am old fashioned in certain ways: cooking, canning, preservation, gardening, etc.

OBSERVANT – being an introvert I like to sit back and watch. As a result I’m very observant of other people and things. I’m an observant gardener, trying to take notice of the small changes that occur each year.

N is for _____________

August 17th, 2011

NATURE NERD – I’m becoming just like my parents – a nature nerd. I have bird, tree, and plant identification books and a pair of binoculars. I know the names of many plants, including scientific names. All of those things I learned in science classes throughout my life are coming in handy.

NONPARTISAN – my political views span all parties fairly equally so I don’t really ascribe to any. I’m registered as an independent. I try to read and listen to news from all sides and make my decisions according to my personal judgement. I don’t allow specific parameters set forth by the various political parties to define who I am politically, I refuse to vote by a label or party lines.

NUMBERS – I’m a numbers person – the family accountant. I love adding, subtracting and multiplying in my head, balancing my checkbook.

NATURAL – I love all things natural. If I can find a natural product to replace something plastic in my home I do. I use natural sea sponges, loofah, wood, etc.

NOISELESS – I love peace and quiet, noise in general kind of bothers me. I don’t listen to music in the car or in the house.

NUTRITIOUS – I definitely focus on nourishing foods ascribing to the Weston A Price suggestions.

NICKNAME – I don’t go by my real name – which is Susan. I usually go by Susy or for those who know me well Suze, or by a few other names.

About

This is a daily journal of my efforts to cultivate a more simple life, through local eating, gardening and so many other things. We used to live in a small suburban neighborhood Ohio but moved to 153 acres in Liberty, Maine in 2012.
