Garlic Giveaway

October 17th, 2013

It’s that time of year to start thinking about planting garlic. Mine is going to be planted where the sweet potatoes were this summer. I plan on planting a lot of garlic, loads and loads of it. I never seem to have enough and I like giving it away as well. We eat a lot ourselves and I feed it to the chickens and the dogs every now and again.

Last year I did a giveaway thanks to Peaceful Valley Farm & Garden Supply (also known as GrowOrganic.com), a company that my parents have been purchasing from since I was a kid. I’m more than happy to get a great prize for one of you while helping spread the word about this great company!  Peaceful Valley also has a in depth weekly newsletter with loads of how-to videos and lots of useful information.  They’re also on facebook if you want to keep up with their sales.

The garlic giveaway special will feature: a Garlic Combo collection, a quart of liquid kelp and plant labels. The garlic combo pack contains: 1 head of Elephant (conventional), 3 heads of California Early White (organic softneck), 3 heads of Music (organic hardneck), 3 heads of Russian Red (organic hardneck), 3 sets of French Red Shallots (organic).

So why the liquid kelp?  Garlic bulbs do better when soaked in liquid kelp before planting.  It gives them the boost they need to get a strong root system going before winter arrives in earnest.  The plant labels were included because I have a very bad habit of never labeling my garden plants, particularly the garlic.  As a result I have different kinds of homegrown garlic in my pantry but I don’t know which is which.  The labels should help you keep things organized!
garlic combo Giveaway 2
If you’ve never grown garlic before, don’t worry. I’ll have a garlic growing guide up on the blog next week.  Deadline to enter is Wednesday, October 23 at midnight. Winner has been chosen via random.org – #72 – Matt who said, “I’ve loved garlic all my life.. Now I’m starting my own Back to Eden style garden and of course plan garlic to be part of it.”

How do you enter this giveaway?  Tell me what’s your favorite way to use garlic in the kitchen?

I love to put garlic in almost everything. My favorite dish has onions, garlic, broccoli and chicken with pasta and Alfredo sauce.

We use garlic when making pickles, in a lot of seafood dishes (especially shrimp), for garlic butter, various stir fry dishes, and have even made garlic flavored bread. Thanks for the chance at your giveaway!

Wow, where to start with garlic. I put it in just about everything except icecream! If I have to pick a favorite, I guess the first thing that comes to mind is using it in guacamole.

We use garlic in just about everything except coffee and dessert. However, my favorite use is in quick sauteed vegetables, cooked up in olive oil with plenty of garlic and whatever herbs and spices would go well with the rest of the meal. My husband distrusted veggies at first, having grown up with mushy commercially canned stuff, but he loves garlic, so I used garlic as his “gateway drug” and he’s decided properly prepared vegetables are delicious.

What don’t I use garlic in?!? I’d have to say that my favorite, though, is pickled in with Dilly Beans.

My favorite way to use garlic is in a marinade for grilled salmon. Chop the garlic, and grate some fresh ginger, add it to a mixture of soy sauce and olive oil, mix together and pour over salmon fillets and let marinate for 30 minutes before broiling. Even my picky son eats it. We use fresh garlic from the garden – delicious!

I love, love, love garlic in anything savory. But my passion(s) at the moment are home-made salsa and dilly beans with lots of garlic.
Speaking of garlic, I’m prepping the garden bed for planting my first ever batch of home-grown garlic. I’ve been told to work in a lot of good aged compost, but the liquid kelp sounds like a great idea too. Thanks for the heads-up!

Mmmmmm….garlic love! I use tons of garlic on chicken & beef, mashed potatoes, roasted potatoes, “tomatoes on toast” as my husband calls it (bruschetta), in soups, salads and many other things. Oddly enough, I don’t particularly care for it roasted.

I use garlic in almost everything but my favourite is definitely when I roast the entire head long and slow. Often I just eat this spread on crustini, but I LOVE it spread on the bread of a rare beef dip sandwich (with left over beef from a Roast of Prime Rib). SOOOOO GOOOD!

I love garlic in all ways – raw, sauteed, roasted, deep fried… but my favorite thing about garlic is it’s healing and antibacterial properties. If I feel a cold coming on, I mix minced raw garlic with a glass of water and gulp away the illness.

We blend finely chopped garlic (or scapes when available) with good quality organic cultured butter. This keeps for a long time in the refrigerator and is ready to go for bread, pasta, vegetables or fish either to cook in or as a topping.

I have a daily relationship with garlic. Hardly a day goes by that I’m not cutting up at least one clove to put in some dish for dinner: stir-fry, casserole, soup, omelet, etc. Most of our garlic is given to us by a friend whose neighbor grows a field of it. We are so sad when it runs out in the spring. So this year, because of your podcast, my husband put in a fall planting of it. Thanks!

I use garlic all winter in my chicken’s and dog’s water and also in their morning mixture of cooked rice, quinoa, millet, flax seeds and any greens I can find. They love it and it keeps them healthy during the cold winter months in the northeast. In my own kitchen, I roast it, sautéed it and crushed into just about every dish I make. My mother-in-law always tells me that coming to my home reminds her of her Ukrainian grandmother’s house. She used to have a bowl of raw cloves and eat them regularly for good health and lived into her nineties. I haven’t tried it yet, but I am sure I will someday. I also just started slicing it thin with a garlic slicer and I am slow roasting them for winter storage.

  36. Mandie on October 23, 2013 at 9:52 pm

I love roasted garlic for its sweetness, and cooking with garlic to add a depth and layer of flavor. Last night I made a pork tenderloin, browned it in some garlic oil, and served with roasted broccoli, also tossed in garlic oil! I really enjoy raw garlic, the pungency and spicy bite….mmmmm! I wonder how’d I like just chewing on a clove?!

I love garlic for being something that helps chase away “the baddies” and keeping us healthy. I……I just love garlic!!

Recently: coconut oil in pan… then garlic… then a sliced mushroom or two… then some pieces of leftover polenta, bite-sized…salt & ground pepper… After this gets cooked a little I’ll add in a big handful of chopped kale and let it cook for just a bit, not too long. Last a diced tomato and another sprinkle of salt- just toss it and turn it off and after a minute slide it onto your plate for a delicious treat! Kale is amazing- being able to eat it just partially cooked and so quickly and having it taste so good (GARLIC!)is awesome- and you’re getting a lot more of the calcium by adding in the tomato with it’s vitamin c. <3
