Echium

September 11th, 2018

Back in 2009 I visited Longwood Gardens and spotted this echium growing in a container.

I’ve been wanting to grow one ever since, though sourcing the seeds has been tough. There’s a blue variety that I really like Echium pininana ‘Blue Steeple’, which I found seeds for but haven’t purchased yet (maybe now?).

Have you ever seen these in person? What’s a crazy plant you’ve seen that you’ve always wanted to grow?

Annie’s catalog out of California has the plants for sale. They are a wonderful plant nursery, that carries a lot of tropicals, sub tropicals but also just about any great perennial available. She specializes in older varieties of plants that the mass market have ruined over time. She wants heavy flowering, stronger smelling, more disease resistence. I love her stuff, although her postage rates are on the higher side

I’ve purchased from Annie’s before, they have a great selection. In fact, this spring I purchased a few own root roses from them that I’m hoping will be very hardy in my northern climate.
