A Favorite
Every time a flower blooms I’m reminded why I have it in my garden. My favorite flower is whatever is blooming at the time. At the moment, the peony poppies are exquisite.
I have these blooming in all sorts of colors, lavender, dark pink, light pink, white. There are single ones and double ones. Next year I’m thinking of getting a few seeds for some dark ones, I’d love to see some almost black ones in with this pink color.
What’s your favorite thing blooming in the garden right now?

Back in Ohio we had this lovely short yellow foxglove growing in our garden. It was there when we arrived, I think it’s Digitalis lutea. It’s a lovely specimen, much shorter than the big purple and white foxgloves (which I also have in the garden). The yellowish green color is perfect for brightening up a shady border. The short height makes it perfect for the front of a border.
I got a plant from my mom’s garden last summer, she got her plants from me originally. It’s nice to finally have it in the garden again. Hopefully I can save seeds from this and get a few more going to plant along the woodland edges.
Have you ever lost a plant that you love through moving?

Two weeks ago I ordered 10 True Dwarf English Box from e-bay. They arrived and I put them in the nursery area. Boxwood is one of my favorite shrubs and I’ve been collecting different varieties. I don’t have many, but a few.
These will eventually line the pathways in the potager, I’ll need a lot more than 10. I plan on letting these grow a bit then start propagating more. Box are so easy to propagate, I have 20 new box plants growing on, a few in pots and a few in the nursery area.
Have you gotten any new plants recently?

This past weekend we were off camping up in northern Maine, then we were back for the fourth and a boat parade and afternoon of sailing. Now it’s back to the office, housework, and garden work. It’s amazing how quickly things can grow, even when you’re only gone a few days. When I left the peonies were in full bloom.
When I came back they were all gone. That’s OK though, peony season is glorious, even if it is very short. We now move on to hydrangeas, peony poppies, and a flush of other blooms. Even though perennials offer a short season of bloom, they can be staggered to provide color and interest throughout the summer. As I drive around I’m always noticing things blooming in other gardens that I might be able to incorporate into my own.

I have this lovely little hosta that I got from my mom, she got a start from a friend. I have no idea what variety it is, but it’s one of my favorites. The bluish color and the shape of the leaves is quite lovely. It blooms on very sturdy stems and is a particular favorite with bees and hummingbirds. The plant overall is fairly compact for a hosta, it would be perfect along a path or in the front of a shady border.
I should make a trip over to the Viles Arboretum hosta garden, perhaps I can find it among their collection and figure out what this one is names. You can see photos from my trip there a few years ago in this post.
