A Beautiful Day, Week, Month, Season
This fall has been perfect, the days are in the 40’s or 50’s and the nights are in the 20’s or 30’s. The sun is shining most days, which is nice since it’s only out for around 10 hours a day now. With all the beautiful weather I’ve been able to get a ton of garden chores finished up.
Usually, this time of year, I’m trying to prioritize the garden chores that need done vs. the ones that can wait for spring. This year I’m going to be able to get them all finished and extra things that weren’t even on my list. I’m enjoying every last bit of nice weather in the garden, it won’t be long until the snow flies. I am looking forward to swapping my garden boots for snow shoes when that comes!
How has this season been in your garden this year?

The fairy flies have been out in force for the past few weeks. They’re such interesting creatures, they almost look like tiny fuzz balls floating through the air. I love seeing them floating around as the sun sets low in the sky.
I can see why the call them fairy flies both up close and from afar they look otherworldly. I didn’t get a close-up of them, google them and look at all the photos. The ones we have here and fuzzy and lavender in color. This time of year, they make a lovely evening even more magical.
Have you ever seen fairy flies?

This spring I started a tray of Spring Cassis seeds and I’ve been blown away by their performance in the garden. They were the first things to bloom this spring and they’re still going strong. In fact, I cut a few small bouquets for the table this past weekend.
These will definitely become a staple in my garden for many years to come, I love that they’re so easy. They take the cold, they take the heat, they take the dry, they take the wet, overall they seem to be a fantastic little flower for my garden.
What new plants have you fallen in love with this year?

When I lived in Ohio and had a small garden I learned to take advantage of every single nook and cranny in the garden. Since I didn’t have much space, I needed every single inch that I could find to grow all the plants that I wanted to grow. Here in Maine I have way more space than I could ever cultivate, but I still take advantage of all those tiny spaces here and there, like the space under our little front porch between the porch and the giant rock that sits in front of the door.
Mostly I like filling them because otherwise they fill with weeds. This space fills with weeds and looks messy, I thought adding creeping thyme would fill it with lovely herbs that would bloom and provide beauty for me and food for the pollinators. Creeping thyme is one of my favorite plants to use filling the spaces here and there.
What’s a favorite plant you have for filling spaces throughout the garden?
Filed under Around the Garden | Comments (3)Fall Seed Saving
While I clean up some of the garden I save seeds to things I’d like to have more of or grow from seed. Yesterday, I was cleaning out the dahlias in the potager and saw the ligularia seeds. I grabbed a bag and my pruners and saved a few seeds. A few were also scattered around the plant to see if they’d germinate on their own.
I look forward to hopefully growing a few plants for other spaces in the garden. My garden is very large and mass plantings look best. Since it’s expensive to buy plants, I’m starting loads from seed and dividing perennials as well.
Are you collecting any seed this fall while you clean up the garden?
