Friday Favorite: Clean Windows
I love a good clean window, really, really love it. Back in Ohio I cleaned the windows frequently. Here the windows on the house are a bit of a challenge to clean, storm windows really make it difficult, especially if they don’t come off easily. Luckily, the windows on the garage can be cleaned easily so I’m getting my window cleaning fix.
It’s amazing the difference it makes, not only from the inside but from the outside as well. These windows had loads of paint on them from the previous paint job who knows how many years ago. I used my razor scraper and went to town. They needed scrubbed 5-6 times to get the years of grime scrubbed off. Now they’re sparkling clean and I’m happy.
Windows are probably my favorite thing to have clean, as long as they sparkle I can deal with clutter elsewhere.
What’s your favorite part of the house to have clean as a whistle?

Well, it’s that time of the year again to fire up the hot box. Dexter is happy as a clam, he spends his days and nights worshipping its warmth.
I can’t say that I blame him, in the mornings you’ll find me with a dining room chair pulled up in front of it as well. Wood heat is so cozy and you certainly can’t beat the radiant heat of a wood burner. I love coming in and warming my hands by it after spending time in the garden.
Do you heat with wood?

Yesterday was a soggy day here in Maine. No garden work was done, the chickens & pigs barely got fed between the rain storms. My day was spent working in indoors, canning tomato soup, making an apple crisp, cleaning, working in the office. It’s nice to have some time indoors, my house can get a bit untidy when we have weeks without rain. Sometimes, however, I need to take a cue from Dexter and just spend some time relaxing. This cat has the relaxing thing down pat.
That’s what I did last night, I spent an hour reading instead of writing an in depth blog post – hope you don’t mind. I figured the pictures of Dexter would make up for it – he’s one cute cat!
Do you find yourself putting off inside chores when it’s nice outside?

I love finding out about blog readers that have businesses. A few weeks ago I got an e-mail from Emily who wanted to send me a fermenting crock as her value for value for enjoying this blog. I have always thought about purchasing a crock, I just haven’t taken the plunge yet. I can’t wait to fill this beauty with cabbage from my garden.
Emily and her husband import these and sell them on their website Stone Creek Trading. When she first contacted me I went straight to her website and was so impressed with what they sell, beautiful crocks, stoneware, wooden cooking utensils and other great items. These are just the kinds of things I love to buy for myself and for gifts!
Emily also offered a coupon code for other Chiot’s Run readers. Use the coupon code: CHIOTSRUN to get 10% off of your purchase. If you’ve been wanting to add a few heirloom items to your kitchen, now’s the time.
Being a small business owner I try to support other small businesses as much as I can. I also love to support people who are part of the Chiot’s Run Community! I’ll definitely be keeping Emily’s store in mind for future gifts.
Do you own a small business or do you have any great small businesses you love to do business from that you want to share?

You might have thought this post would be about something pertaining to the garden. While I do love Thomas Jefferson’s gardens (see my photos from my visit in these previous postsVisiting Monticello, The Vegetable Gardens of Monticello and The House and Ornamental Gardens of Monticello). This time it’s all about the pet door.
On the upper level of the house, there were round holes cut into the door for the cats to use for hunting mice.
When we decided we needed a pet door to the basement, we considered a few options. We had a conventional pet door back in Ohio, but didn’t want to put one where it would be visible. Then we thought about putting a hole through the floor in the office with a small ramp down to the basement. That seemed a little too involved.
Then we decided it was just more convenient to do what Thomas Jefferson did and cut a round hole in the door big enough for the cats. The cats too to it right away.
This door to the basement is in our dining room, clearly visible when you walk into the room. It will be a good conversation piece no doubt whenever we have someone over for dinner.
There were a few times each one ran into the door on the way through, but that only happened a few times in the beginning. I actually think the cats really love this door. It’s like their own little window, they love sitting on the basement steps peering up or sitting in the dining room peering down. The best part was that it was free!
Do you have anything quirky in your home that was inspired by seeing it elsewhere?
