Hot Vegetable Season
It’s that time of year for Northern gardener to transition to their warm season vegetables. Before we left for Ohio, I pulled out the cool weather crops that bolted in our heat wave and planted peppers and tucked tiny lettuce plants in their shade. It won’t be long until I’m harvesting handfuls of peppers from the garden!
It certainly is great to these classic summer garden plants start to take center stage. I almost can’t wait to eat the first ‘Kind of the North’ and ‘Lipstick’ pepper or the first ripe tomato.
I do have one tiny green tomato in the garden, it’s not from a plant I started. When I went to the Fedco tree sale in April, I picked up a ‘Siberan’ tomato plant. It’s certainly living up to it’s name. I haven’t brought it inside at all and we’ve had many night down into the 30’s. It’s flourishing away, blooming and setting tiny little fruit. You can be I’ll be saving seeds from this lovely little plant, I think it might become a staple in my garden!

Here at Chiot’s Run we’re waging ware on the quack grass! The big garden in back is our main focus at the moment as the edges of it were being overtaken by it.
There are ways of managing quack grass organically. You can follow a tilling regiment for a year and eradicate it that way. Keeping the grass mown short around your garden will also help. I’m using pigs to help get rid of it here.
There’s no way we’ll get rid of this grass this year, no doubt this war will continue for years to come.
Of course the pigs don’t eat all of it, but they root it up nicely and I’ve been picking it out of the soil by the bucket full. I dry it and burn it, revenge at it’s finest!
Do you have a weed that you battle more than others?

About a month ago, I started a few containers of lettuce when I was starting the rest of my seeds. The first one is just about ready to harvest and I can’t wait.
I’ve been really wanting to see green things on my plate and I can’t wait to enjoy this. There will only be enough for a few salads from each planter, but it’s better than nothing!
Do you grow any vegetables or herbs indoors during the off season?

It’s no secret that I love cats, we have 4 of them running around Chiot’s Run. Three of them spend time indoors, two exclusively and one is an indoor/outdoor guy. With that many cats running around, it’s hard to be anywhere without one of them being underfoot, underhand, or on your lap.
Even when I’m working there’s often a cat sleeping on my desk, either to my left or behind my computer.
It sure is nice to have such a good paperweight. Of course when decide to sleep on the keyboard and type messages while doing so, that’s not as welcome. They can be pests at time, but in general, we welcome their companionship.
Do your house/garden companions ever get in the way?

Mr Chiots and I have been away from home for the past couple weeks. We spent a few days in Ohio visiting family & friends and getting our taxes buttoned up. Then we boarded a plane to South America, where we spent 10 days filming, editing, photographing, and writing. After coming back to Ohio, we spent a day resting, then we were on the road again, but not on our way home. We spent a few days driving to Kentucky and Cincinnati, visiting and meeting with clients about future projects.
Now, we’re on our way HOME, back to Maine. While we don’t mind traveling, it’s always a wonderful feeling to be home once again. It will be nice to enjoy coffee from our machine, cook breakfast on our stove, and sit in our favorite chairs to read.
Do you have any trips planned this coming year?
