I’m glad I’m living in the time I’m living, I don’t mind being able to get things like onions whenever I need them or lemons all year long. I do however only eat certain things in season. My favorite in season thing right now – tomatoes; fresh, vine-ripened tomatoes of all shapes and sizes. I eat them fresh every chance I get, I have to get my fill of fresh tomatoes during these couple months since the supermarket varieties in the off-season are just a mere shadow of a real tomato.

The Simple Things

Sometimes it’s the smallest things that catch make us smile. Earlier this week I harvested some tomatoes and brought them into the house and placed them on the dryer by the back door. I ran in to get something and when I came back into the laundry room I had to run and get my camera.

I don’t know what it was about the basket of tomatoes sitting on the dryer by the back door, but for some reason I had to take a photo of them. I love the light coming in the door, the graininess of the photo because of the dark room, and the blurry basket. Sometimes it’s the simplest things that bring us much joy.

Rainbow of Tomatoes

I harvested a few tomatoes yesterday and they were all different colors. The orange one is a Dr Wyche’s Yellow, the yellow is an Azoycha, the red is a Sub-Arctic Plenty and the white one is a White Beauty. We enjoyed the white one and the orange one for lunch yesterday and they were both delicious.

How can you not be excited to eat your veggies when they’re this pretty (actually fruit I guess). I’m really looking forward to the Black Krim and the Cherokee Purples as well.

Do you grow different colors of tomatoes, or is is classic red on your table?

Bring on the Tomatoes

My tomatoes are starting to ripen. Yesterday I picked some Tumbling Toms, Principe Borghese, Sub-Arctic and Azoycha tomatoes. I’m up to 3 pounds of tomatoes from the garden already!

The yellow one is Azoychka – A very productive Russian heirloom found at the Bird Market in Moscow. (”Azoychka” is a woman’s name.) Produce indeterminate, regular-leaf tomato plants that produce an abundant crop of smooth, 3-inch round, slightly flattened, yellow/orange tomatoes with a sweet citrusy flavor. This is a delightful small yellow beefsteak tomato that matures so early it will be one of the first varieties to ripen in your garden. Beautifully smooth, lemon yellow fruit weighs about 8 ozs. and is very flavorful, rich but pleasantly sweet with a delicious hint of citrus.

We enjoyed it yesterday sliced with some salt, pepper & drizzled with a little olive oil. It is the perfect eating tomato. Mr Chiot’s loves it because it’s not too acidic. This one’s definitely a winner in our garden, which is good. I grew this instead of Lemon Boy, which is Mr Chiot’s favorite eating tomato, so I’m glad it’s so delicious!

My First Ripe Tomato of 2009

I harvested my first ripe tomato on Saturday morning (actually I harvested 2, I took one to my mom). It’s one of my Tumbling Tom Tomatoes that’s planted in a hanging basket. I thought my Sub-Arctic tomato would be my first ripe one, but they’re all still green. The plants are loaded with tomatoes though, they should be ripening any day now.

I haven’t eaten it yet. I think I’m going to cut it in half, salt it and share it with Mr Chiots. I’m looking forward to many more tomatoes this summer!
