Still Blooming

November 1st, 2008

I still have a few things blooming in my garden. It seems weird to look out and see it snowing while a Black-Eyed Susan is blooming. This one is actually growing in my driveway.

My Carpet of snow Alyssum is also still blooming. I’ll definitely be planting some more of these next year. They looked great all summer even with the drought.

Surprisingly my Zinnia’s haven’t been killed by the frosts or freezes. My friends that live in town already lost theirs. I’m sure it won’t be too long for them though. My marigolds are also going strong. They look just as good as they did mid summer. We’ll see how much longer they last.

Anyone else still have blooms in the garden?

Final Blooms

Most blooming plants are winding down this time of year, I have a few things that are still blooming including my Endless Summer Hydrangea. It just opened last week.

How’s that for a final show?

One Last Bouquet

September 28th, 2008

I’ve always wanted a cutting garden, but have yet to actually start one. I’m too busy growing tomatoes and other edible plants. Perhaps when I get all my raised beds installed and all the fruit trees I want, I’ll finally get around to the cutting garden. Until then, I just cut a few blooms here and there from the plants in my flowerbeds. Usually you don’t notice too much if you don’t cut too many. This past Wednesday I cut my final bouquet from the garden. I was actually surprised by how much was still blooming.

After I picked all the flowers I had to decide which vase I wanted to use, round or square?

I finally decided and threw the flowers in and then onto the coffee table it went. I should put it on the dining room table where we’ll see it more often, but that’s covered with bowls of tomatoes.

So what’s in this bouquet? Some pink spray roses, a lace cap hydrangea bloom, and a few limelight hydrangea blooms.

There are also a few zinnias, I also threw in some hosta leave for some texture and some fern leaves for some added green.

There’re also a few russian sage blooms. The cats love it, they’ve been up sniffing it all afternoon, looking for bug stowaways I’m sure (they love it when bugs get in the house, tasty snacks). Do you still have anything blooming in your gardens?

Eggplants in Bloom

August 20th, 2008

I started some eggplant seeds this year. They are finicky plants for sure. Mine languished in the cool of the spring and finally took hold. I noticed the other day that it’s blooming. What beautiful blooms it has. Mr Chiot’s and I don’t really like eggplant, but we eat some at least once a year, I figured I would try to grow some this year (perhaps we’ll like it more).

Anyone out there have a good eggplant recipe for non-eggplant lovers? I’m thinking veggie lasagne.

OOOOOOO, I want that

August 5th, 2008

I’m a huge fan of any kind of green flower. When I got my latest seed catalog and I saw this new Echinacea ‘Green Jewel’ – I fell in love. Perhaps next year it will be cheaper and I’ll get one.

Someday I would like to have an all green flowerbed filled with Bells of Ireland, Green Envy Zinnias, Green Jewel & Coconut Lime Echinacea, Limelight Hydrangea, Frosty Morn Sedum, Cypress Spurge, and Lady’s Mantle.
