Friday Favorite: Rice

March 27th, 2015

I love rice, really, really LOVE it. Since I grew up in South America, rice was a staple. As a result it’s kind of like a comfort food for me, rice and beans. I could eat a big bowl of plain rice for dinner. Delicious fragrant rice cooked with sweet browned onions and coconut oil. Cilantro lime rice is another one of my favorites.

I find my enameled cast iron pan to be the perfect pot to cook rice in. Many years ago I had a rice cooker and it worked well, but it quit working and I started using this pot. It cooks rice to perfection every time.

What are some of your comfort foods?

Friday Favorite: Gifts

March 20th, 2015

Unexpected packages from friends are such a wonderful thing. This week I sent a package to a friend in Ohio and I received a package from a friend in Ohio (not the same friend).  Finding something unexpected from someone I love is one of the little things that makes my day, it definitley makes you feel loved and appreciated. I really need to make an effort to send a note or gift to someone at least once a month.

As you can see Dexter enjoys getting gifts from friends too!

Have you sent/received something unexpected recently?

Friday Favorite: Renee’s Garden

March 13th, 2015

I’ve been buying seeds from Renee’s Garden for many years. One of my favorite things about her seeds is that you can get multiple varieties in one package. This year I got the Long Harvest Broccoli that contains three different varieties in the seed packet. This is so handy for those of us that don’t want to buy three different packets of seed but would like to grow a few different varieties. I’m really interested to see how this work, I’d love to have a longer broccoli season.

The seeds are color coded as well, so you can label them as needed. These were the zucchini seeds I planted two years ago.

I’m so appreciative that Renee takes the time to develop handy things like this that are so helpful for the home gardener. Her varieties are also selected specifically with the home gardener in mind.

Do like to grow multiple varieties of the same vegetable?

Friday Favorite: Longer Days

February 27th, 2015

The end of February always marks the time when I distinctly notice that the days are getting longer. Sure I start to notice it a little in early February, but in late February it hits me that I’m cooking dinner and there’s still light outside. This is one of my favorite things!
sunny days 2
I notice the sun is high enough in the sky to cast a glare on the living room floor and to give me lens flare when I’m taking photos.

This is the thing that finally gives me hope that spring will come. It makes me excited to start seeds and to plan out my garden for the summer. This weekend I plan on moving my big grow light to a warmer area of the house starting many flats of seeds. Hopefully I’ll have onion, celery, spinach, and lettuce along with a few herbs.

Do you notice the days getting longer this time of year?

Friday Favorite: Experiments

February 20th, 2015

I’m always experimenting to find better/faster/more efficient ways to do things. It’s nice when that natural drive coincides with a job. I mentioned previously that I’m writing an article for Grit magazine about small scale fodder systems. I’ve been trying different types of grain, oats, barley, wheat, rye, as well and hulled an unhealed grain to see which is best.

It’s a lot of work, but fun work and needless to say the chickens have been loving every single option!

Any fun experiments going on in you garden/farm?
