A Fun Class

March 9th, 2015

This past Saturday a few friends and I went to a local glass studio (David Jacobson Glass) to take a glassblowing class. It was a blast! David told us that the hardest part would be picking out our colors, it truly was. I was amazed at how fast the entire process went, it was really only around 2 minutes from start to finish for each ornament.

Above are the three ornaments that I made, which I absolutely LOVE. I’m thinking I might go back to make more ornaments, they would make fabulous handmade Christmas gifts for family and friends. I’ll also keep this in the back of my mind for when we have friends from out of town visiting. It was a fun way to spend an afternoon and it’s nice to have something to display when you’re finished.

Have you done anything new and fun recently?

Death and Taxes

February 24th, 2015

“In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.”
-Benjamin Franklin

Yesterday I spent the day filing out my tax notebook for my accountant. We’ve had the same accountant for many years, he’s always been FANTASTIC. He’s not cheap, but the peace of mind he provides and the savings he provides on our taxes more than makes up for his hefty fee. Of course our taxes are not simple, with two businesses and now a woodlot to add to the mix he has to work hard to get his fees.

I’m sure I could do our taxes myself, but I like having someone else check my figures and maximize my tax benefits. Kenny is fantastic at what he does, he has a masters degree in accounting after all. It’s ridiculous for me to think that I can do something he’s studied many years to do. He also keeps up with all the tax laws and makes sure all his clients know any new laws that affect their businesses throughout the year. He really is worth his weight in gold, at least in my mind. I like spending a few hours filling out the notebook on his website and then signing forms and paying the bill when he’s all finished up! I’ll spend my extra time starting seeds this time of year.

Do you do your own taxes or have someone do them for you?

Quote of the Day: Willa Cather

February 8th, 2015

“There’s no good reason Mrs Shimerda couldn’t have got hens from her neighbours last fall and had a hen-house going by now. I reckon she was confused and didn’t know where to begin. I’ve come strange to a new country myself, but I never forgot hens are a good thing to have, no matter what you don’t have.”.

This is so true, it’s great having hen in the coop laying eggs. If we get snowed in we always have eggs from the coop and potatoes from the root cellar.

Do you have chickens? Would you like to have chickens?

Quote of the Day: Snow

February 1st, 2015

“To appreciate the beauty of a snow flake, it is necessary to stand out in the cold.”
-Unkown

We’ve been getting nailed with snow recently, a couple feed on Tuesday and another foot yesterday. There are HUGE piles of snow everywhere and it’s fantastic. I’ve been heading out with my snowshoes in the afternoons for hikes. There really is nothing better than a sunny winter day!

One of the best things about a big snowstorm is when the sun comes out afterwards. The skies clear up and the sunset is always amazing that evening. I love the stark difference between the coolness of the blue snow and the warmness of the yellow sunset. We’re supposed to get another big storm this week – looks like we’ll be trying to figure out where to put even more of that fluffy white stuff.

Have you been getting any big snow this winter?
