Friday Favorite: New Patterns

January 4th, 2019

Last Fall, I purchased Noodlehead’s new pattern for the Fika Tote. My plan is to make one for a camera bag, since it’s a large bag lined with foam and has large pockets inside. I didn’t want to make my camera bag straight away, because I wasn’t sure exactly how I wanted to change the interior of the bag to fit lenses & cameras. I made this version per the pattern, it turned out quite nicely. I don’t really need it though, so I’ll be adding it to Seeds & Sundries to sell it. Hopefully it will be useful for someone else.

Now I need to get on making myself one just for my camera equipment. I’m thinking of making foam lined inserts that can easily be lifted out of the bag instead of pockets sewn into the bag. I’ve been sewing up a storm now that my sewing room is all moved and set up. Stay tuned for more of my makes.

What creative outlets have you been pursuing lately?

New Year, New Goals

January 2nd, 2019

I don’t make New Years resolutions, but I often set goals, or some specific thing I want to focus on throughout the year. It’s usually something that translates through to everything I do. This year, my goal is “Less, But Better”

Less, but better…..food
Less, but better…..stuff
Less, but better…..gardens
Less, but better…..projects (to focus on enjoying the process of creating, not just the finished product)
I want to have a bit more time to sit, relax, and enjoy being.

My focus is also to use up what I have. I want to eat up all the food from the freezers and the pantry. I want to sew the patterns I have and use up fabric from my stash. This will not only save me money this year, it will help clear some of the things out of the house and reduce the amount of stuff we have in many spaces.

What are you goals & intentions for 2019?

Quilt #2

December 27th, 2018

This was the year of quilts for Christmas. I finished this quilt top (also acquired in a thrift store fabric grab bag) for my neighbor. Orange is her favorite color, so I knew she’d love it. The backing was a sheet from my stash, the binding was made from two different scraps of fabric which I got in a different fabric grab bag.

I quilted this one by hand as well, which was an enjoyable evening activity. No doubt this quilt will be loved and put to good use for years to come.

Holiday Gifts

December 26th, 2018

As promised, I’ll be sharing a few of the gifts I made to give out this Christmas. One of my favorites was this lovely quilt. I didn’t make the top, I got it in a fabric grab bag. It’s definitely old, the entire top was hand sewn together, with tiny seam allowances, which mean I had to do a lot of repairs before adding the batting and backing and quilting. The yellow striped binding is a lovely fabric from my stash, it is linen and should wear well and soften nicely with use.

I quilted it by hand, since I enjoy hand stitching a lot. It’s a wonderful way to spend evenings during the winter. I think the receipient loved the quilt, no doubt she’ll be using it to keep warm for years to come. It’s nice to give another life to a quilt like this. If only I knew the story of who made it and where it came from, at least it will have a future story and be enjoyed.

Do you have any vintage quilts?

Gingerbread House Party

December 18th, 2018

This past Saturday night we had a gingerbread house making party. It wasn’t anything fancy, there were a few pre-made kits and everyone brought various decorating tidbits. Here’s what we ended up with:

This was mine, complete with holly hedge, M&M box topiary beside the door, tootsie roll flagstone pathway, and giant candy cane decor in the garden.

What holiday fun have you participated in so far this season?
