Happy Anniversary!

May 31st, 2013

Yesterday, Mr Chiots and I celebrated out 15th wedding anniversary. Well, celebrate is a strong word. We actually just went about our usual business, celebrations are not really our thing. Even though I’m the one that writes all the posts and takes most of the photos, Mr Chiots is a big part of this blog and puts in lots of hours. Case in point, many of you probably couldn’t get to the website last night or this morning. Our web hosting company moved our sites to a new server and messed everything up. Thankfully, Mr Chiots knows what he’s doing and spent many hours on the phone and chatting with the company trying to get things fixed (amazing when he knows more than the company we’re paying to manage our server).

Anyways, a big thanks to Mr Chiots for dealing with all the behind the scenes parts of the blog and podcast to keep things running as smoothly as they can. If we hadn’t married 15 years ago, this blog would not exist – so I suppose our anniversary is a rather important thing for Chiot’s Run!

Quote of the Day: Weston A Price

May 26th, 2013

‎”The quality of our food determines in large part the quality of our lives. And the quality of what we eat is determined by every step that goes into production and processing – the feeding of the animals, care of the soil, preservation, storage and even cooking methods.”

Weston A. Price (Nutrition and Physical Degeneration)

Yesterday, I made a batch of butter using the spring grass milk I picked up from a local farm. This time of year it’s always amazing to note how yellow the cream starts to get. In the winter, you can see the cream line in the milk, but this time of year it’s like night and day. The milk is white and the cream is a vibrant yellow. This yellow cream makes the most beautifully yellow butter. You can see the nourishment as you’re rinsing it.

The cream is so yellow because the cows are eating the lush spring grass. Our farmer pastures her cows, they’re 100% grass fed. The results are easy to see and taste. While winter milk is still much tastier than store bought milk, spring milk is out of this world in creaminess and sweetness.

There’s nothing I love more than freshly made butter slathered on a piece of homemade sourdough bread. Life is certainly good this morning here at Chiot’s Run!

Food from a Truck?

May 25th, 2013

Yesterday, Mr Chiots and I had to run a bunch of errands. While out and about, we decided to stop at a food truck for lunch. Generally, this wouldn’t be something we would do, in fact I’ve never purchased food from a food truck before. This one is different, Good ‘n’ You in Belfast has homemade food with many ingredients sourced from local farms.

Mr Chiots ordered a burrito and I got a Maine shrimp taco, we split an order of jalapeño poppers as well. We grabbed our food and headed down to the shore and chatted while we watched a few boats and tourists walking around.

With Dailon back in Ohio for a few weeks and all of our guests gone, it’s really nice to be able to spend some time together. Next week, we’ll celebrate our 15 year anniversary. It’s certainly hard to believe that it’s been that long, yet hard to imagine a time when we weren’t together. We’re not big on celebrating events like this, yesterday was probably as much celebrating as we’ll do.

Have you ever purchased food from a food truck?

Quote of the Day: Joe Eck & Wayne Winterrowd

May 19th, 2013

Having time at one’s own command is perhaps the greatest luxury any human being can enjoy. Most people wait for it until the end of their working lives; too often, then, the special savor of it is brief or already lost entirely.

I was thinking about this quote earlier this week as I took a few days of much needed vacation. In fact, it was so much of a vacation, I didn’t even check my e-mail for 2 entire days. This never happens, even when I’m traveling on vacation.

What did I do with my days of vacation? I spent time with a friend, we drove to a few lighthouses nearby and we took a day trip to to Acadia National Park.

After a very hectic and busy spring, a few days of time away were very nice. Too bad it couldn’t have been more, I opened my e-mail yesterday to find many pressing things that needed added to my to-do list for this coming week.

What would you do if you had time at your own command?

The Sweets

May 18th, 2013

A few of you have been asking about the little black feral cat that made the trip with us.  She was kept in the house for two weeks after we arrived before being transitioned to the garage. She adjusted very well, making herself right at home.  We didn’t see her much at first, she was a tad timid in her new environment.  After a month or two she was back her usually self.

I’ve been seeing little offerings of moles in the driveway and tiny mouse heads in the garage, so I know she’s working hard.  Now that spring is here and I’m working the garden, she’s usually close on my heels hoping to get some attention while I’m working.

While she’s partially tame, she still retained her wild feral roots. If you’re just visiting you’ll probably never see her, in fact she’s even timid around Mr Chiots. She is tame enough to want to sit in my lap on a rare occasion.

Have you ever had a feral cat?
