Hitting the Road
This morning we were up early and ready to hit the road. Mr Chiots is driving the big moving truck towing the MINI behind. I’m following in our other car with all four cats and Heather, one of our neighbors.
No doubt it’s going to be a LONG day, but we have walkie talkies so we can chat and audio books to listen to. On the recommenation of a friend, Bossypants on the iPod as is Travels with Charley in Search of America (my favorite all time listening material for traveling).

Moving forward, that’s what will be happening this week. On Wednesday we’ll be headed east, down a new path to our new home.
I’ve had so many people asking if I’m going to miss this place. Maybe I will, but probably not. I grew up accustomed to moving and leaving things behind. As a result, I find myself more often excited about the possibilities ahead rather than bemoaning what lay behind. I find change to be rather exciting and exhilarating.
I’ve always said that change is good because it keeps us from getting stagnant.

Making a Statement
Yesterday, at noon, I found myself standing on the corner of a major intersection in our area with a sign:
I’m not much of one to do these kinds of things, but one of my good friend is very involved in the fight against fracking and wastewater disposal here in our community. She helped coordinate a state wide rally that took place in communities all around the state yesterday.
The hope was to raise awareness of the fact that Ohio is a dumping ground for many other state’s fracking water and the dangers that come along with this.
Since she’s a good friend of mine, I went to support her and to take some photos to publicize the rally. We stood on a main intersection in town around lunch time waving our signs. Thankfully, we got a lot of people honking and giving us the thumbs up (a few other fingers too, but we won’t go there). Some folks that actually stopped to chat, thank us in person and to get some information to pass along.
This kind of involvement is really not my thing. I much prefer to work in the background. I’ll cook, support, make signs and just about anything but be out in the middle of things. Standing on the corner holding a sign is WAY out of my comfort zone. Sometimes, it’s all about supporting those you love and a cause you believe in above staying in your comfort zone. I’m thankful for those that are fighting to keep our water and air clean for future generations!

Quote of the Day: Oscar Wilde
To live is the rarest thing in the world.
Most people exist, that is all.
I’ve been thinking about this quote lately and was just telling Mr Chiots on Monday that I love our life. We have spent a lot of time and effort weeding out the things that we think waste our time and money and aren’t worth the return of “life” that they provide.
This is one of the reasons we do so many of the things that we do. When you sit down to a breakfast of pancakes and the maple syrup you use was collected and boiled down by your own hand, it truly does taste sweeter.
When I cut a piece of bread from a loaf I baked using the sourdough starter I’ve cultivated for years it satisfies more than just my hunger.
Living deliberately is something we really focus on and feel it gives us a deeper richer life.
Big bold plans are in the works for the upcoming year, new ways to live life even more fully and hopefully encouraging others to do the same. Can’t wait to share what we’ve got up our sleeves!

Frost Kissed Seed Tin Giveaway
Yesterday, we arrived home and found a package on the doorstep from Peaceful Valley Farm Supply. Of course that made me giddy, as packages of seeds and garden goodies always do! I’m very familiar with this company, because my parents have been ordering from them since I was a little girl. Back in the day, they were one of the few places to find organic gardening supplies.
Inside my package I found a big bag of Soil Builder Cover Crop with an envelope of inoculant. Being a huge fan of various cover crops and the wonderful benefits they provide, I’m really looking forward to trying this out!
I also received a collection of various seeds that I will experiment with planting this fall and winter. Which seeds arrived? ‘Little Finger’ carrots, ‘Flame’ lettuce, ‘Bloomsdale’ spinach, ‘Pink Beauty’ radish, ‘French Breakfast’ radish, ‘Sparkler’ radish, Mesclun mix, Braising greens mix, arugula, ‘Tres Fine’ endive, ‘Freckles’ lettuce, and ‘Black Seeded Simpson’ lettuce.
Along with all of the wonderful cold tolerant vegetables above, I also received the Frost Kissed Spring or Fall Mix Seed Tin. I plan on planting some of these this fall in a low tunnel to see how they do. The remaining seeds will be planted early next spring.
