Quote of the Day: John Ruskin

May 27th, 2012

All things are literally better, lovelier, and more beloved for the imperfections which have been divinely appointed.

John Ruskin from (The Wabi-Sabi House: The Japanese Art of Imperfect Beauty)

Take some time to notice the beautiful imperfections in the world around you today.

Quote of the Day: Alexander Pope

May 20th, 2012

“All Nature’s difference keeps all Nature’s peace.”

Alexander Pope

I was thinking about this quote the other day when someone asked me about my pest control in the garden. Here at Chiot’s Run I just let nature run it’s course. Occasionally I’ll lose a crop to a pest, but I like to observe to see how nature works and what will happen. We must remember that the “pest” insects feed the benficial insects and the birds. If we meticulously get rid of all “bad” insects in the garden we’ll be inadvertently getting rid of beneficial things as well.

What’s your favorite beneficial insect and which is your more loathed pest insect?

Friday Favorite: Diablo III

May 18th, 2012

I mentioned a while ago that Mr Chiots and I enjoyed playing computer games together. We’ve been playing both Diablo and Diablo 2 for a LONG time. Not many people know this about me and they’re surprised when they find out.

We’ve been waiting for Diablo III to come out for so long. We preordered our copies last fall and were hoping they’d come out for Christmas. The game didn’t come out for Christmas, but Mr Chiots got me this mousepad instead.

This past Tuesday the game officially launched and our pre-ordered copies arrived via UPS. Sadly, I have had too much going on to play. Mr Chiots has played for an hour or so.

It’s too bad the game arrived during our super busy season. Not only are we trying to get everything ready for selling and moving, the gardening season is in full swing and our business really picks up in the summer. Looks like I won’t be playing much until this coming winter. I also like playing board games, Scrabble being my all-time favorite.

What’s your favorite game, either computer or other board games?

Quote of the Day: Thalassa Cruso

May 13th, 2012

Gardeners should love what they own & own what they love; but their gardens should never own them, there will be no pleasure in them if they do.

-Thalassa Cruso (Making Things Grow Outdoors)

I thought this quote was quite fitting. There once was a time when I was trying to get way too much done when it came to the garden. One day I realized “it’s not a race”. I didn’t have to get an entire orchard planted in one summer, or to fill every flowerbed with plants the first year.

After realizing this my gardening has taken a much slower pace. I still spend countless hours each week in the garden, but I don’t get stressed out if I don’t get something accomplished that I was hoping to get done.

As a result, gardening is much more relaxing. I can enjoy the simple pleasure of slowly weeding a flowerbed without worrying if I’ll have time to install a hedge of roses or not. When I get time, I’ll have a hedge of roses, until then, I’ll relish the fresh cleanly weeded flowerbed.

What pace do you typically maintain as a gardener?

Happy Mother’s Day

May 9th, 2012

Yesterday, I went over to my mom’s. We picked up my nieces and went to the Buchwalter Greenhouse so they could buy a Mother’s Day gift for their mom (my sister). They also needed to get a few new plants for the Fairy Garden that we made last fall. They really enjoyed walking around the entire greenhouse oohing and ahhing over all the beautiful flowers. They debated and argued over what they wanted to get for their mom.

They finally settled on this lovely hanging basket bursting with lovely flowers. My mom buys it and the kids pay it off with chores at her house. I also purchased the same basket for my mom and it looks great hanging on her front porch.

On the way home we stopped by Hartzler’s Dairy to pick up some ice cream. The kids then spent the afternoon playing outside with a cart my dad built that my sister and I used to play on when we were kids. I think flowers and plants make the perfect gift, you can plant them in the garden, enjoy them on the porch and when the season is over they can become houseplants or go into the compost pile.

Do you enjoy receiving flowers for gifts for Mother’s Day or other holidays?
