Enjoying the Last of Summer
I realized I haven’t given you an update on Lucy in a while (if you don’t know what happened read about the original injury here and here’s another one a month later). She’s been progressing quite well this summer and is now able to go on 20 minutes walks with us in the evening. We’re going to start adding another short walk in the morning soon. She is only limping a little, and occasionally she even jogs a little bit. Her injury hasn’t stopped her from enjoying the summer, she’s been sunning herself every afternoon and chasing bees whenever she gets a chance, although chasing deer, rabbits and the UPS man is still off-limits.
One of Lucy’s favorite summertime treats; watermelon ends. She gets very excited when she sees me bring one home from the farmer’s market, and as soon as she hears me cut it, she’s by my side in the kitchen waiting for the end. Out to the porch she goes with her watermelon end and you’ve never seen such a cleaned out rind when shes through!
There’s just something about watermelons that say “summer”. I’m truly sad that summer is coming to and end, the chill in the air and the twinge of color on the trees lets me know that it won’t be around much longer. I’ll be sad that watermelon season is over, but I’m also looking forward to fresh bread and soup season!
What foods you associate with each season?
Farmer’s Market Goodies
I was finally able to head to the farmer’s market last Saturday after not being able to go for a month (busy Saturdays working for our business). I found all kinds of lovely things to buy, including a lot of green beans.
Dexter thought they were wonderful cat toys that I bought for him. He stole a few and I found all 3 cats playing with green beans later that afternoon. No need to spend $4 on a furry mouse, a green bean from the farmer’s market will do. I’m guessing they would also love small turnips and beets.
Have you found any unexpected uses for produce this summer?
Blooms Around the Garden
We’ve been having a lot of rainy days lately, which we actually need here at Chiot’s Run, unlike most of the country. It’s been really cool, in the low 70’s during the day and down into the 50’s at night. I’m not complaining about the weather, it’s actually very nice, but it does inhibit the ripening of the crops. I suppose it’s good for the cabbage and broccoli. The cats have the right idea on these rainy cold dreary days.
Since I’ve been inside for the past couple days, I haven’t been doing much in the garden. I did run out yesterday during a break in the rain to snap a few photos of some of the things that are blooming around the garden. I only got a few photos in before it started raining again.
I’ve noticed that the hummingbirds are loving the nicotiana and the lantana that I have in the front and the bees & butterflies love the liatris and the hyssop.
What’s blooming in your garden right now?

Our pets provide us with hours of entertainment. It seems like every hour we’re laughing at something one of them is doing. We often grab the camera and snap a few photos.
We have a full glass storm door on the front of our house. In the afternoons when the sun’s shining we open it up, all of the pets love it of course.
Dexter is especially fond of this door. He basks in the sun whenever he can.
I love the progression in these next photos. From a peaceful afternoon nap to a quick bit of fun.
Never a dull moment around here with all of these pets.
What kinds of pets do you have? Do they provide lots of entertainment for you & your family?

Dexter’s feeling right at home here at Chiot’s Run. He’s enjoying having food all the time and living inside a warm & toasty house.
He’s decided he really likes the domesticated life, especially the posturepedic mattress he gets to sleep on all day. Samson (our orange cat) is enjoying having a new playmate, we hear them often running up and down the hall. Dexter’s even decide that Lucy’s OK and he no longer hisses at her.
We’re enjoying having Dexter around as well. He adds a new dynamic to the household; he has a great personality and he’s very talkative.
He’s quite a cutie isn’t he?
