Quote of the Day: Walt Disney
We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.
Walt Disney (found at Brainy Quote)
Moving forward, that’s what will be happening this week. On Wednesday we’ll be headed east, down a new path to our new home.
I’ve had so many people asking if I’m going to miss this place. Maybe I will, but probably not. I grew up accustomed to moving and leaving things behind. As a result, I find myself more often excited about the possibilities ahead rather than bemoaning what lay behind. I find change to be rather exciting and exhilarating.
I’ve always said that change is good because it keeps us from getting stagnant.
Do you like/enjoy change?

To live is the rarest thing in the world.
Most people exist, that is all.
I’ve been thinking about this quote lately and was just telling Mr Chiots on Monday that I love our life. We have spent a lot of time and effort weeding out the things that we think waste our time and money and aren’t worth the return of “life” that they provide.
This is one of the reasons we do so many of the things that we do. When you sit down to a breakfast of pancakes and the maple syrup you use was collected and boiled down by your own hand, it truly does taste sweeter.
When I cut a piece of bread from a loaf I baked using the sourdough starter I’ve cultivated for years it satisfies more than just my hunger.
Living deliberately is something we really focus on and feel it gives us a deeper richer life.
Big bold plans are in the works for the upcoming year, new ways to live life even more fully and hopefully encouraging others to do the same. Can’t wait to share what we’ve got up our sleeves!
What are a few of the things you do that you feel really enrich your life?

It’s very illuminating to have to make a list, which you will very possibly have occasion to use, of the things you’d save in extremity. It reduces one’s material possessions to their proper place.
Louise Dickinson Rich We Took to the Woods
This is also the case when moving, or at least it should be. Going through everything you own and asking yourself what you really need. The truth is, we really don’t NEED that much to survive. It is nice to have things that make our lives more comfortable, but it can weigh us down if we have too much. Thankfully, Mr Chiots and I started minimizing our stuff many years ago. We stepped off the consumerism treadmill by dedicating an entire year to not buying anything we didn’t need to survive. At the same time we started getting rid of things we didn’t use or need. As a result, packing should be a little easier. During the process, we’re also trying to go through everything to lighten the load even more. There are still a few things that we’re asking ourselves: to take or not to take?
Take my hanging baskets for example, I don’t really NEED them, but I do like them. Do I want to pack them, take them to Maine, store them over the winter, plant something in them, and water them next summer? That is the question, do I want to deal with hanging baskets? There isn’t even a front porch at the new place.
They’ll go into the “maybe” pile. Things that we’re on the fence about and may part with if the moving truck gets too full.
How good are you about keeping your things at a minimum? Do you find it difficult to part with things?

No matter how hard you will ever work, you can never gain control over a wild wood, which teaches you something about human effort and the grandiosity of a life’s plan. I like to think the woods represent a limit to the humanly possible, a place where you can talk all you want but you’ll never convince the trees to obey.
Linda Tatlbaum from Carrying Water as a Way of Life: A Homesteader’s History
One can’t help but feel very insignificant when surrounded by a very old wood. As gardeners, we try to bend nature to produce the look that we want. When you travel into the woods you realize that nature really does do it better than we every could.
When was the last time you spent time in the woods?

In seed time learn, in harvest teach, in winter enjoy.
~William Blake
This year I’m finding myself really looking forward to winter and the rest that it brings. We’re entering the final push for all the changes that will happen. The contractor finally arrived this past week and we’ve been madly working this weekend! The hardwood flooring is all done (more about this project a few others later this week).
All these long days filled with lots of work have become the usual for the past 6 months and it’s starting to catch up with us. Luckily the finish line is in sight. There will be a For Sale sign out front this coming weekend and there are only four more weeks until we move. Thankfully – winter will be before we know it and will bring much needed down time!
Are you looking forward to fall/winter?
