Quote of the Day: Rand B. Lee

April 18th, 2010

Needless to say, a five by five foot plot of sweet corn is not going to feed many people for very long. But that is not why urban backyard gardeners create such things.

They create such things to remind themselves that once the world was a soil world, a bee world, a bird world and a seed world, not the concrete thing it has become.

Rand B. Lee (Pleasures of the Cottage Garden)

We live in a technology saturated society surrounded by flat images. So often we spend our time looking at photos or watching movies instead of getting out and enjoying the real thing. I garden because I like to step away from my computer and get out into the soil, bird, bee and seed world.

Do you garden to help balance out the concrete world we live in?

Quote of the Day: Elizabeth David

“Every day holds the possibility of a miracle.”
~ Elizabeth David

This time of year the garden changes daily, new things are blooming and the world is coming alive. Every time I got outside I see something new and exciting. The world of brown is being transformed into a world of color each and every day. Here are a few shots from my garden this past week.

I’m certainly enjoying this lovely time. Spring is the best time for gardening, the weather is perfect, it’s exciting, there are few weeds and all the chores are fun. I’m making sure to enjoy the most of these early days in the garden. Soon enough the drudgery of weeding and the hot sticky weather will be upon us.

What miracles are happening in your garden this week?

The Rewards of Growing Vegetables

March 30th, 2010

The most rewarding part of growing vegetables is harvesting them. It is incredibly satisfying pulling from the ground vegetables you sowed as seed in the spring.

-Christoper Lloyd & Richard Bird (The Cottage Garden)

I’m reading The Cottage Garden book at the moment and I really really like it. I actually got it from the library again, it’s the second time I’ve read it. I decided it’s worthy of being added to my library and I purchased it last week. If you like cottage gardens and like growing vegetables you’ll be delighted by the garden plans and all the information, plant suggestions and photos in this book.

What’s the most rewarding part of growing vegetables for you?

Quote of the Day: Aaron Rose

March 21st, 2010

One day when Mr Chiots and I were on a walk, we spotted these dried up weeds in the ditch by the side of the road. They were beautiful in the evening sunlight and caught our eye. Not something I would notice as a thing of beauty on most occasions, but on this evening it certainly was! Often I’m inspired to take photos because of the light. Here are a few other moments that were made extraordinary by the light and moment.

Have you ever noticed something extraordinary because of the light and the moment?

Rainy Days

March 14th, 2010

“Anyone who says that sunshine brings happiness,
has never danced in the rain.”

~ Author Unknown

It’s been raining here since Friday evening, not that I mind. I’ve been baking up some more sourdough bread for the freezer and cooking up a few dishes to eat on this coming week. I managed to score some lovely mushrooms at the Local Roots Market and I paired them with a venison roast courtesy of Mr Chiot’s hunting last fall. What a delicious combination.

I’ll be baking up some squash today to make some butternut squash soup, butternut squash ravioli, squash pudding and some Barley with Butternut Squash & Preserved Lemons (remember those preserved lemons I made?). These will all be for the Real Food Challenge over at Not Dabbling, so I’ll be taking photos of everything for future blogposts. I can’t think of a better way to spend a rainy weekend than in the kitchen baking up some warmth and happiness.

What’s your favorite way to spend a rainy weekend?
