Quote of the Day: Harlan Miller
I wish we could put up some of the Christmas spirit in jars and open a jar of it every month.
~Harlan Miller
I’m sad to see Christmas has come and gone. We had to work on Saturday so we didn’t get to enjoy our usual day after Christmas traditions. We did take part of yesterday off though to relax and take in a little more of the season. I think one of the things I love this time of year is the peacefulness of it. Even though we’re still very busy this time of year, it seems easier to take time off here and there for family celebrations and for ourselves.
What part of the holidays would you jar up for the rest of the year?

For each new morning with its light,
For rest and shelter of the night,
For health and food, for love and friends,
For everything Thy goodness sends.
~Ralph Waldo Emerson
I found myself in an appreciative mood last night, so I thought this quote was perfect.
What kind of mood do you find yourself in today?

Thanksgiving is the holiday of peace,
the celebration of work and the simple life… a true folk-festival
that speaks the poetry of the turn of the seasons,
the beauty of seedtime and harvest,
the ripe product of the year
and the deep, deep connection of all these things with God.
~Ray Stannard Baker (David Grayson)
This year I’m particularly thankful for the changing seasons and the beauty and variety it brings to my life. I really appreciate the ebb and flow of the seasonal changes and I love being in tune with those through gardening and eating locally and seasonally.
Happy Thanksgiving from Chiot’s Run!
What are you thankful for this year?

“Only when the last tree has died and the last river
been poisoned and the last fish been caught
will we realize that we cannot eat money”
Cree Indian, 1909
Mr Chiots and I are big fans of camping and hiking, it’s our vacation of choice. We just watched the PBS National Park special and we really enjoyed it. I visited most of the National Parks with my family growing up but Mr Chiots hasn’t been to very many.
We’re hoping to go on a long vacation next year to add a few to his list. He’s particularly excited to visit Mt Rushmore and I can’t wait to go back to Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park. The place we want to visit most is Alaska!
We’re thankful for all of those that came before us that saw it fit to set aside the parks and continue to save them for all of us to enjoy. We want to see as many as we can and enjoy the beauty of this great country we live in!
Have you ever visited any National Parks? If so which is your favorite?
**All of these photos were taken at the Great Smoky Mountain National Park during 2 different trips (one with our very best friends, hence 4 sets of hiking boots).

“We can only be said to be alive
in those moments when our hearts
are conscious of our treasures.”
-Thorton Wilder
This time of the year I really enjoy the sunsets. Since all the leaves are off the trees I’m able to see and enjoy them.
What moments this time of year make you conscious of your treasures?
