Let it Snow, Let it Snow
This morning we woke up to a winter wonderland here at Chiot’s Run. It sure makes the day much brighter! We loaded up Lucy in the car to take her to vet to get those staples taken out and we enjoyed listening to some great Christmas music on the way! When we got home I snapped a few quick photos of some blooms covered in snow. Soon enough there won’t be any color left in the garden.
Larkspur in snow and ice
Aptly named, Carpet of Snow Alyssum.
A few marigolds are still hanging on, although I think this will be the end of them.
Kelly over at Brooklyn’s Blog posted about the snow they got, they got even more that we did up in Northern Indiana.
Anyone else out there get any measurable snow accumulation?

We woke up to a little snow/ice accumulation today.
Mr Chiot’s and I finally turned on our furnace this morning (we’ve been trying to hold out as long as possible). One day at the end of October we woke up to a frosty 56 inside, but with some baking & a nice sunny day the house warmed up nicely, so we didn’t have to turn it on. Last night ee finally decided that is was time, so we’re enjoying a toasty warm 60 day inside this morning (we like it cold in the house during the winter, it is winter after all, just put on another sweater).
Anyone else still holding out on turning on the heat?

I still have a few things blooming in my garden. It seems weird to look out and see it snowing while a Black-Eyed Susan is blooming. This one is actually growing in my driveway.
My Carpet of snow Alyssum is also still blooming. I’ll definitely be planting some more of these next year. They looked great all summer even with the drought.
Surprisingly my Zinnia’s haven’t been killed by the frosts or freezes. My friends that live in town already lost theirs. I’m sure it won’t be too long for them though. My marigolds are also going strong. They look just as good as they did mid summer. We’ll see how much longer they last.
Anyone else still have blooms in the garden?

Yesterday morning when Mr Chiot’s and I were getting ready to head out to a shoot it started snowing. How exciting! We’re super excited about the coming winter and we’re hoping for tons and tons of snow. It’s difficult to get a good photo of a tiny snowflake, but I managed to get 2.
Anyone else out there get snow already?
Echinacea: Spring through Fall
This is an echinacea in spring, summer and fall, it really is beautiful in all seasons.
Don’t be to quick to cut off your perennials in the fall, they add beauty to the fall garden and they provide seeds for the birds in the fall and winter. Many beneficial insects also winter over on the dry stalks.
Are you quick to clean out your beds or do you leave the flower stalks standing till spring? Mine stay until new growth emerges in spring.
