A Day Off
Mr Chiots and I have the day off; well, kind of. Usually we’re working all day on Saturdays and I often don’t get time to make it to the farmer’s market. But today we don’t have to be at a shoot until early afternoon. I’m going to enjoy my day off by getting up and heading down to the farmer’s market. It’s much smaller this time of year with fewer vendors, fewer vegetables and fewer shoppers. There are still lots of wonderful things to see, the colors are so fantastic. The summer’s bright red tomatoes and green bell peppers have been replaced the mellow colors of indian corn and deep orange pumpkins.
I think one of my favorite fall seasonal things at the market are the pumpkins. They just scream fall every time I see them. I can just see the bowls of steaming pumpkin soup, the chilled pumpkin pies and the delicious pumpkin muffins coming out of the oven. Mr Chiots would probably choose apples as his favorite fall item, he’s a big fan of apple pies, apple crisp and pretty much anything that involved apples and sugar.

Indian Summer [in-dee-uhn suhm-er] an informal expression given to a period of sunny, warm weather in autumn in the northern hemisphere, typically in late October or early November, after the leaves have turned but before the first snowfall.
Since we seem to be having our indian summer here in NE Ohio, I’ve been putting in some much needed time getting gardening chores finished up. Yesterday I spent the afternoon emptying pots and stacking them to dry a bit. They’ll all be moved into the garage for winter storage today or tomorrow (depending on the weather).
As much as I don’t really want to see winter come, I do welcome the down time in winter. Fall preparations remind me how much I need a break from all the activity. A gardener needs to have some time off just like the garden does. I love the seasons of gardening in the north, each for what it offers. Spring is a time of excitement, Summer for bounty, Fall for comfort and Winter for rest.
How would you describe each of the seasons you experience in your area of the world?

“Autumn is a second spring, where every leaf is a flower.”
-Albert Camus
I think peak leaves will happen this week here in NE Ohio, too bad they’re calling for gloomy, rainy, snowy weather. I love the changing of the leaves because it helps make this season a little more bearble. It’s tough because you know soon enough all life will be dormant and everything will be brown. But the explosion of colors really helps brighten my mood!
What do you enjoy most about the changing seasons (or do you have them where you live)?

I was out working in the garden the day before yesterday planting some lettuce and I noticed that it feels like fall. There’s that chill in the air, you know the one that makes the sun feel good on your back and your fingertips get cold when they get wet. The breeze has been constant and you can hear leaves falling all around.
The fall colors are starting to appear, red, yellow and orange. Around here the first leaves to change are the dogwood trees.
I love this time of year, it’s so relaxing to work outside. I love the colors, the cooler weather, the falling leaves and the brightness of the sky.
What’s your favorite thing about fall?

I realized I haven’t given you an update on Lucy in a while (if you don’t know what happened read about the original injury here and here’s another one a month later). She’s been progressing quite well this summer and is now able to go on 20 minutes walks with us in the evening. We’re going to start adding another short walk in the morning soon. She is only limping a little, and occasionally she even jogs a little bit. Her injury hasn’t stopped her from enjoying the summer, she’s been sunning herself every afternoon and chasing bees whenever she gets a chance, although chasing deer, rabbits and the UPS man is still off-limits.
One of Lucy’s favorite summertime treats; watermelon ends. She gets very excited when she sees me bring one home from the farmer’s market, and as soon as she hears me cut it, she’s by my side in the kitchen waiting for the end. Out to the porch she goes with her watermelon end and you’ve never seen such a cleaned out rind when shes through!
There’s just something about watermelons that say “summer”. I’m truly sad that summer is coming to and end, the chill in the air and the twinge of color on the trees lets me know that it won’t be around much longer. I’ll be sad that watermelon season is over, but I’m also looking forward to fresh bread and soup season!
