The Last Peony

June 23rd, 2008

This morning I noticed that the last peony blossom is out, it will be gone soon so I snapped a photo of it. I’m not sure what the name of this particular peony is, I inherited this plant when we bought this house.

Little Lettuce Seedlings

June 22nd, 2008

The lettuce seeds that I started in Monday (June 16) were up by Thursday. They were down in the cool of the basement to help with germination. As soon as they sprouted, out to the garage they went under the growlights. I’m hoping they will be ready to plant in the garden in a week or two. This cool weather in Ohio is extending the life of the lettuce that’s still in the garden. I guess that means fewer days with store bought lettuce!

New Tool

June 22nd, 2008

It’s always fun to get new gardening gear. After reading a few of Eliot Coleman’s books and a few other blogs I decided to buy a collinear hoe. I found the one I wanted at Lee Valley Tools. I received the hoe today and tried it out. It’s great!

I love that they have environmentally friendly packaging. This wrapping is going to go around my comfrey plants as landscaping fabric!

I like before & after photos. It’s always good to see how much you have accomplished.

Roses

June 19th, 2008

I have 2 white rose bushes that I adopted 5 years ago. They are supposed to be climbing roses, so they were planted on both sides of our front porch to climb up the posts. Well, they’re not hardy enough for zone 5 to be climbing. They’re so finicky, always with some black spot or aphids. Since I don’t like to use pesticides in the garden and I don’t want to baby plants, they will be gone next year – anyone interested in some white semi-climbing roses? They are beautiful and they bloom all summer long.
