Heronswood Tour
I’m happy to announce that I was able to schedule a tour of Heronswood on September 9th at 10 am. This garden has been on my bucket list for a LONG time. Last time I was in Seattle it was up for sale and not open to the public, which was a BIG disappointment. When I checked about visiting this fall I found out that the minimum number of people for the tour is 10 (with a $10/person charge). I went ahead and scheduled the tour, if I don’t end up finding a group of 10 I’ll be paying the tour fee by myself, which is completely worth it. It would be nice to tour with the garden with friends, so if you live in the Seattle area and would like to join us let me know.
I’ve seen lots of photos of this garden and it looks amazing. I can’t wait to see it in person.
Do you have any gardens on your must visit bucket list?

“Summer afternoon—summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.”
― Henry James
This weekend Mr Chiots and I are on vacation. We didn’t really go anywhere. Vermont was the original plan, but the thought of driving 10 hours in one weekend was too much, so we decided to enjoy the beauty in our own backyard. Friday was spent at a beach in Tenants Harbor with friends and yesterday we went down to Boothbay Harbor and Ocean Point. Today we will do whatever we like, perhaps head back down to Ocean Point with our walking shoes or bicycles, or maybe we’ll head down to Marshall Point Lighthouse.
I have mentioned before how much I LOVE living in an area where there are distinct seasons. Summer is so much sweeter because there is a long, cold winter. I’m trying to soak up as much summer as I can while it’s here, making the most of my time in the garden and making the most of the lovely place we live. In the past week I’ve spent time sitting at the edge of the ocean on three separate occasions, it’s wonderful to live so close to the sea.
Do you have any vacation plans this summer? Will you be staying at home or traveling?

Yesterday was the second week of the local garden club garden tour series. The featured garden was right on the ocean and it was lovely. Lots of rock walls, walkways and terraces made this sloping lot useable. The massive oak and ash trees made for a mostly shady lot. I must admit, taking photos of the flowers and plants when there’s a strong wind coming off the ocean was a bit of a challenge. Here’s a tour of this lovely ocean garden. One nice this about this garden was that they had maps and keys listing all the different plants.
I especially loved the rock walkways in this garden, stone always looks right at home in a woodland setting like this one.
What’s your favorite part of this garden?

Yesterday morning I attended the first in the garden tour series put on by my local garden club. It was the Wolfe-Cunning Garden on the outskirts of town. The lady we purchased our house from was manning the booth at the garden, so we had a chat to catch up on what was going on in each of our lives. The garden was great. It’s always nice to see a real life garden, not one in a magazine that has been staged and manicured. Sometimes seeing real life gardens make us realize that our gardens are truly wonderful as well.
This garden is lovely, simple and lovely. There’s lots of mulch and lots of native plants. You can see that they are keen a little human cultivation but allowing nature do it’s thing. Sometimes that’s a hard balance to find as a gardener. I won’t go into too much detail about the garden, the photos speak better than it do. There are a lot of them, so get a cup of tea and enjoy a tour of this lovely garden in midcoast Maine.
So what do you think of the Wolfe-Cunnin Garden?

In a few months my mom and I will be taking a trip to Seattle. I have visited many times, Mr Chiots and I actually went there on our honeymoon 16 years ago, but my mom has never been. We thought taking a trip together each year would be a great way to spend time together since we live so far apart now. Since either of us would have to travel for a visit, we may as well meet up somewhere interesting.
Since I have been to Seattle before, I already have a list of things to do. Since my mom is an avid gardener we’ll definitely enjoy visit Bloedel Reserve and the Japanese Garden.
Of course we’ll spend a day in the city visiting the Space Needle and Pike’s Place Market. No doubt we’ll drink lots of coffee and eat lots of great food as well!
There also might be a day trip to Mt Rainier if my mom wants to see the mountain.
Whenever I have been in Seattle I’ve wanted to head across the water to Victoria B.C. to see Buchart Gardens. This is on our list of possibilities, I’m debating taking the day clipper trip from Seattle or spending a few days over there. It’s so hard to choose what to do when you head out on an adventure. I like to maximize my time on vacation, but I also want to make sure we have time to relax.
Do you have any great recommendations for things to do and see or restaurants that are delicious for us to visit while in the Seattle area?
