Chiot’s Run On Ice

February 2nd, 2011

No doubt many of you experienced the same ice storm that we had Monday night. We woke up to a bejeweled landscape, everything was dripping with frozen crystals. I couldn’t wait for the sun to come up so I could head out and take some photos. I bundled up, put on my boots and headed out until my fingers were frozen. I think one of them may end up on the 2012 Chiot’s Run calendar.

Ice storms are probably the worst winter weather we get here in NE Ohio, snowstorms make can make life difficult, but with ice things often shut down. Yesterday all the local schools and colleges were closed. Fortunately we didn’t lose electric as we often do during ice storms. (Yep we lost electric, I’m at at Muggswigz my favorite coffee shop in Canton checking e-mail and doing a little work.) This ice is rough on the plants as well, often breaking branches off trees. My trumpet vine still hasn’t bounced back from an ice storm we had 2 years ago. We’ll see how long it takes us to thaw out from this weather.

What’s the worst kind of weather you get where you live? Did you get any ice or snow from this current system?

Quote of the Day: Dr Seuss

November 28th, 2010

“Don’t cry because its over, smile because it happened.”

~ Dr Seuss

I’ve been going through my photos trying to trim down the numbers and I was reliving the beauty of summer in the garden. I sure am sad to see it go along with all the color in the garden, but I certainly appreciate the beauty of winter and the rest that it brings not only to me, but to the garden as well. Here’s an ode to summer.

I think I’m going to miss the color green the most. At least I have a lot of photos to get me through.

What are you going to miss the most about summer now that winter is coming?

The First Snowfall of the Season

November 8th, 2010

Friday evening, right before we went to bed, we noticed it was snowing. Usually our first snow fall doesn’t amount to anything, it melts off as soon as it falls. When we got up Saturday morning we were amazed that we had about a half inch of snow on the ground.

The first snow is always exciting. If it’s going to be cold outside I want to have snow on the ground. Snow really brightens things up during the long dark winter months in NE Ohio. The snow is also good for the garden as it provides a nice insulating layer for the plants and the soil.

Do you live in a climate where you get snow? Do you like snow or do you wish it didn’t fall?

The First Frost

November 2nd, 2010

Funny that I blogged about not getting frost yet yesterday (written Sunday evening) and we woke up to a temperature of around 30 or possibly lower. Generally our first frost date is October 15, but we can have frost anywhere from the end of Sept through the end of October. Last year our first frost was in September.

There was a fairly heavy frost yesterday morning. I always like the first frost, I especially love it when it comes on a sunny morning, everything sparkles in the sun and the air always seems clearer. I love the way the frost outlines everything in crystals, it’s really quite amazing. I’m always inspired to get out and take some photos when I see the first frost gracing the gardens.

We often get frost later than others around us because our gardens are surrounded by tall trees and we live on top of a hill. It has to be a fairly heavy frost for us to see any in our gardens. It’s nice to have the protection from the frost, but I’d rather have more sun in my gardens.

When do you usually get your first frost?

Fall is Coming

September 29th, 2010

Yesterday I came home and noticed that the leaves were collecting by the back door and it hit me that fall was here. I love fall so I’m quite excited about the changing of the leaves, raking, pumpkins, cider, camp fires, cool weather and all the other wonderful things that come along with the changing of summer to fall.

If I had to pick my favorite thing about fall, I think I’d have to pick the weather. There’s something wonderful about the crispness in the air after a long hot humid summer. It’s quite refreshing and really helps me get all my fall gardening chores finished.

Do you have fall in your climate? What’s your favorite thing about fall?
