The Perfect Day

October 22nd, 2009

I think yesterday may have been the perfect day. It was sunny and warm, with the high hitting 70 or slightly above. I spent the day working in the garden soaking up the sun and getting some much needed vitamin D after the weeks and weeks of dull dreary weather.

I was able to get a lot accomplished in the 4-5 hours I spent working outside. I emptied more pots and the pile on my back deck keeps growing, I’m about a third of the way through. I still have a lot on the front porch that housed tomatoes through the summer. All of the spent potting soil will be added to my flowerbeds as a mulch and any leftovers will be put in the compost pile.

I planted some Mediterranean White Heather on the back hillside. I had to build a few small rock walls to help retain the soil which I amended for these plants. They’ll provide some much needed winter interest since they bloom in winter. I have some Mediterranean Pink Heather on my front hillside and it is quite lovely. I noticed on the plant tag that it said they were zone 6 plants, when I bought pink ones 3 years ago they were listed at zone 5, hmmmm. They’re supposed to be tough little plants that can take cold dry exposed areas, which is exactly where I planted them. I’ll let you know how they come through the winter.

All-in-all I’m very pleased with the amount of garden chores I was able to check off my list. I still have many more of course, the most important being the planting of my garlic. I plan on spending a few hours in the garden again today making the most of our Indian Summer!

How do you classify “The Perfect Day” in the garden?

Some Rain, Finally

September 22nd, 2009

Yesterday we finally got some much needed rain. It’s been dry here all summer, particularly the last couple weeks. It’s so dry the native weeds are wilting and dying, which I don’t think I’ve ever seen happen.

I had to break down and drag out my sprinkler last week to water the flowerbeds and veggies beds. We didn’t get much rain, but it was some and I’m happy with the little we got, and I got a decent amount in the rain barrels to help cover the next dry spell.

How’s the weather in your neck of the woods?

Blooms Around the Garden

July 24th, 2009

We’ve been having a lot of rainy days lately, which we actually need here at Chiot’s Run, unlike most of the country. It’s been really cool, in the low 70’s during the day and down into the 50’s at night. I’m not complaining about the weather, it’s actually very nice, but it does inhibit the ripening of the crops. I suppose it’s good for the cabbage and broccoli. The cats have the right idea on these rainy cold dreary days.

Since I’ve been inside for the past couple days, I haven’t been doing much in the garden. I did run out yesterday during a break in the rain to snap a few photos of some of the things that are blooming around the garden. I only got a few photos in before it started raining again.

I’ve noticed that the hummingbirds are loving the nicotiana and the lantana that I have in the front and the bees & butterflies love the liatris and the hyssop.

Rain, Rain, Glorious Rain

July 19th, 2009

We finally had some rain this weekend after a long dry spell. We’ve been really needing some around here because everything was getting kind of brown and crispy.

I love sitting on the porch during thunderstorms and feeling the cool breeze, watching the lightning and listening the thunder. While enjoying the rain I snapped a few photos of the rain on one of my hanging baskets.

My mom’s not the kind of person that likes to go outside during a thunderstorm. Unless it’s really bad, I’m usually on the front porch during the storms, I just love them!

What about you, do you like to get out and enjoy thunderstorms, or do you like to stay inside?

Rainy Days in the Garden

June 19th, 2009

We finally got some much needed rain on Tuesday night, all day Wednesday and Thursday morning. I was excited on Wednesday afternoon when I looked at the rain gauge and we had over a half an inch of rain!

We’ve been really low on rainfall this spring, so it was refreshing to have to take a couple days off and let everything in the garden get watered in well. There were some pretty nasty storms with tornadoes spotted in areas around us, but it seems like all the severe stuff skirted just south of us, so we only got the good kind of soaking rain.

By the end of the rain storms we ended up with over an inch of much needed rain. The plants are all well-watered and my rain barrels are full and I’m happy!

I actually love rainy days, I usually end up cooking and cleaning. Wednesday I made a delicious loaf of sourdough bread and a big batch of braised red cabbage.

What about you, do you love rainy days? (take the poll)
