The First Yellow Swallowtail
This morning while weeding I noticed the first monarch (oops it’s a yellow swallowtail, thanks for correcting me mom!) of the season. They sure do like the echinacea. I really need to plant a few more flowers for them.
Hummingbirds
We have a few hummingbirds that come back each year. Last year we put up a small feeder on the kitchen window, our cats love to sit in the windowsill waiting for the hummingbirds to come. I’m hoping to plant a few more flowers for them in coming years. They sure are hard to get a photo of, I managed to get this one yesterday, maybe I can get the ruby-throated one as well!
Planting More Lettuce
This morning I planted some more lettuce seeds. They are in the basement where it’s cool for quicker germination, I also put the seeds in the fridge for a couple days to cool them off. I wanted to do succession planting this spring, but I’ve had too many other gardening chores this year so that didn’t happen. I know they won’t be up & ready before we eat the last of our lettuce that’s in the garden, but hopefully we’ll be enjoying them later this summer.
What kinds of lettuce did I start?
Arugula
Butter May Lettuce
Mesclum Mix
The Good Life
Mr Chiots and I are big fans of watching TV shows on DVD (no commercials!). We just finished up Good Neighbors, a British sitcom from the 70’s. If you’ve never seen it I’d suggest getting it from the library and having a good laugh. I’ll warn you, the first episode or two are a little rough, keep watching, you’ll be glad you did!
Here’s a funny clip from the show.
In the Garden
I like to take a walk around the garden in the morning to see what’s blooming. This morning I noticed that my foxglove are taller than I am and the first Echinacea is in bloom. Here are some photos from the garden this morning
