Summer in Maine

July 4th, 2018

Summer in Maine is short and sweet, we try to make the most of it by spending as much time outside as possible. The Fourth of July is spent at the lake with our neighbors, swimming, boating, watching the parade, eating chicken BBQ from the local fire dept….a perfect day all around.

What are you plants to celebrate the Fourth of July?

Holiday Feasting

December 27th, 2017

This past weekend we didn’t do a lot. Since our families both live back in Ohio, we travel back at Thanksgiving and celebrate Christmas at that time. That leaves us with a very low-key holiday on our own. Typically, we spend the time with our neighbor’s, but the all had the flu this year, so we stayed away. That means we spent our days reading, eating, plowing all the snow from the blizzard, eating, watching movies, and eating some more.

I made Swedish cardamom rolls, which have been a favorite since our trip to Sweden last year. They just might become a new holiday tradition, we enjoy them so much more than cookies. For Christmas dinner we roasted a duck, one of our Muscovies that we raised and slaughtered earlier in the years. The majority of the sides came from the garden as well, which certainly makes Christmas dinner a meaningful meal.

Eating is a big part of our holidays, which is the way it should me. Food can be such an important part of our lives and celebrations. Perhaps since we don’t have lots of parties and lots of gifts, we notice the food part of our holidays more. Either way, food is such an important part of holidays, we wouldn’t have it any other way!

What are some of your favorite holiday foods?

Every year, when I come back to Ohio to celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas, we make cookies with the nieces & nephew. This year was no exception. Yesterday, we made a few and we’ll be making more today.

I don’t make Christmas cookies at home, with only two of us they don’t get eaten up before we get sick of them. It’s great to make them with the kids, we make bunches, give them to neighbors and eat them with abandon. By the time we leave, I’ve had my fill of cookies. Gingerbread men are my favorite, this is my recipe if you’d like to give it a try. There’s a reason I don’t make these at home, I simply can’t quite eating them.

What’s your favorite cookie during the holiday season?

Thank You

Happy Birthday Mr Chiots!

January 24th, 2013

Join me in wishing Mr Chiots a happy birthday. We’re not big on celebrating birthdays around here, no presents are exchanged or anything like that. Generally I’ll cook a good meal and make Mr Chiots some cookies or cake (that’s enough present for him).

Mr Chiots is an unseen force on this blog. He doesn’t write, but he takes care of all of the behind the scenes stuff. He makes sure the server is up & running, the software is up to date, he makes changes when they are needed. He really does keep the blog rolling, without him I probably would have quit long ago when the first server crash happened.

He roasts our coffee and keeps my cup full and keeps our freezer stocked with venison to eat. He cut wood to keep us warm, changes the oil to keep the cars running, goes with me on long hikes, keeps me laughing and is always willing to lend a hand in the garden if I need him.

Join me in wishing Mr Chiots a HAPPY BIRTHDAY. He is a valuable part of this blog and I certainly appreciate all the hard work he puts in behind the scenes!
