Warm & Cool

December 18th, 2017

In the winter, the sun is at such a low angle all day, the light is always warm and golden. This always is such a difference from the cool blue of the snow and ice that dominates the landscape. When we have freezing rain and ice builds up on everything, it makes for a stunning show.

Days like this always get me to grab my camera and head outside, even despite the cold. This day was really cold, with the wind chill in the negatives. I thought about heading back to the main garden to take photos there, but ended up deciding the ones I got were good enough.

What’s one of your favorite things about how the light changes throughout the year?

Friday Favorite: Ice Storms

March 31st, 2017

Even though we often lost power and they cause a host of problems, I love a good ice storm. This past week had a beautiful layer of ice on everything outside.

It was lovely during the day and it was even better at night, especially in the old apple tree out front draped in white lights.

What are you loving this week?

Winter Mix

January 25th, 2017

Even though freezing rain and ice storms are a pain, generally because we lose power, they’re quite lovely. Everything becomes jeweled with drops of ice. If the sun comes out the next morning it’s even more brilliant.

This winter I didn’t get my rain chain taken down, so it was dripping with lovely icicles yesterday when the freezing rain was falling. Things like this are a good lesson to find beauty in the inconvenient.

What beauty are you noticing around you these days?

Good Morning Sunshine

December 28th, 2013

With all the weather we’ve been having over the past week, the sun hasn’t shown it’s face very often. ¬†Christmas morning, it did rise up over the horizon right in front of the house. ¬†It was a stunning sunrise, especially with all the ice still lingering on the trees.

One of the things we LOVE about Maine is that the sun is out almost all winter long. In NE Ohio we barely saw the sun during the winter months, they skies were always grey.

Do you see the sun frequently in the winter months?

Beautiful – but Painful

December 24th, 2013

The ice storm continued all day yesterday, we lost power for a few hours in the afternoon but it came back on. I still have a “lights out” blog post scheduled for tomorrow in case they go out again and I can’t get on-line. Ice storms are beautiful, but they’re a mess. We have enough ice that trees are dropping branches left and right. When you go outside the sound of branches and trees coming down is constant. Lucky for us, there aren’t any trees close enough to drop branches on the house. The chicken coop barely escaped a big white pine branch.

It should be interesting to get out a little today to see how much damage has been done. We won’t be able to go into the wood until all the ice melts and we’re hoping our driveway melts soon.

Anyone else dealing with ice and power outages from this storm?
