Back in the Saddle

May 20th, 2019

Last week Mr Chiots and I were in Ohio visiting family (and Mr Chiots had a work meeting). I had grand plans of writing blog posts and scheduling them to post while I was gone, but there was too much to finish up in the garden before we left. I’m also trying to spend a little less time working and a little more time doing the things that I love. I’m sure you’ve noticed that I no longer write daily blog posts, taking vacation times away is also something I’ve been doing. When we were in Ohio, we took a day trip to Kelleys Island, a place I’ve visited several times in my life.

We made sure to stop at the glacier grooves, a place I distinctly remember visiting as a kid. Then we had a picnic lunch and drove the golf cart around the island looking at gardens and houses. We hiked out to Sheele Preserve and were awed by its beauty (despite the terrically muddy trail to get there).

It was a wonderful day, perfect weather for a day outside on the islands. This was our first day trip of this kind, in the future we are thinking of planning vacations to other destinations (if you have any recommendations let me know).

Family Day At Kingwood

November 1st, 2016

Kingwood Center in Mansfield is a real gem, it’s a beautiful garden that’s small enough for a quick trip on a nice day. It’s only an hour away from my parent’s house, so we often take an afternoon to visit the gardens when I’m back in Ohio visiting. It’s also inexpensive, only $5 per car to get in, which makes it doable for my sister and her four kids to join us.

The weather was perfect that day, sunny and 75 degrees, amazing for the end of October. My mom felt well enough to walk around the gardens with us and we had a nice afternoon enjoying what will probably be the last warm day of the year. It was a beautiful day at a beautiful garden.

Do you have a favorite outing as a family?

Fun, Fun, Fun

September 15th, 2015

Yesterday, I spent the day with my mom, my sister, and my nieces & nephew. We met early to walk around the Secrest Arboretum at the OARDC in Wooster, OH. There was walking, chatting, running, photo taking, and lots of fun.

We then went to our favorite local ice cream place, Hartzler’s Family Dairy.

In the evening, we ended up at the Wayne County Fair for Lerch’s Donuts and to look at all the flowers and vegetables.

Overall, a super fun day. I have always loved going to the fair and this was no exception. Lucky me, we are going back on Wednesday when Mr Chiots is here. I’ll get more donuts!

Do you attend a local agricultural fair?

A Few Days in Ohio

September 8th, 2014

Since my mom and I were traveling to Seattle, WA together this week, I flew into Ohio a few days early to visit with family. Mr Chiots went with me, he’s flying back to Maine today after spending yesterday visiting with his family. On Friday we went down to the family cabin and enjoyed a day of fun with our nieces & nephew.

We also stopped by the farm where the kids have their ponies. They have two ponies that someone is keeping for them until they buy their new place.

On Saturday we went to the Wayne County Fair, a favorite and a family tradition. We like to go on opening day to see all the flowers and vegetables at their finest. We also must buy Lerch’s Donuts and my dad likes to watch the horse pull.

This fair is everything a rural county fair should be and we had a great day! Of course I’m probably prejudiced, but this is the best county fair there is and I have been to a good number of county fairs.

Do you attend a local county fair in the summer?

18 Years and Counting

September 3rd, 2012

Way back in 1994 I was a college freshman in Cincinnati, OH. That fall, I met five other girls with whom I would form a close friendship. Little did we know that 18 years later we’d still be getting together yearly for a reunion. This past weekend was our 17th one. Throughout the years we’ve reunited in different places, rented cabins, at each other’s houses, until we settled on traveling back to the city where it all began.

One member of our group still lives in Cincinnati, thus we all stay at her place. The rest of us drive in from our respective locations in Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio. Not all of us can make it for each gathering, but there are always at least four of us. We have celebrated weddings, rejoiced at births, comforted after divorce, and cried at a funeral throughout the years.

Even though we don’t talk much throughout the year, when we come together it’s like we were never apart. We laugh as we tell funny stories from the past and much time is spent filling each other in on what’s going on in our lives.

It is a weekend filled it lots of laughter, great food, and good company. This past weekend we went to the Findlay market, walked down the by the river, rented a quad surrey and went for a ride in the park. Of course, all the Cincinnati specialities like Graeter’s and Skyline Chili were checked off the list as well.

It’s really hard to believe that I’ve known these lovely ladies for 18 years, time really does fly. It seems like yesterday when we were eating key lime pie out of the pan in our hotel room of our first get together the summer of 1995 the summer between our freshman and sophomore years.

Do you have any friends that you reunite with on a regular basis?
