Friday Favorite: Fresh Snow

December 21st, 2018

One of my favorite things is a fresh coating of snow. It makes everything lighter and brighter, especially when the sun shines! Earlier this week, we got a few inches of snow.

Sadly, we’re supposed to get 2″ of rain today, so it will all melt away, leaving behind an icky brown mess and there will be no white Christmas.

Do you live in an area with snow?

Digging Out

March 15th, 2018

Tuesday into Wednesday another big nor’easter hit us here in Maine. In fact, this one was classified as a blizzard. It’s still snowing outside the window as I write this post, but so far we’ve gotten about two feet of snow. We have a metal roof, which sheds the snow. Unfortunately, the vents for the dryer and gas water heater are about a foot off the ground on that side (we’re still trying to figure out why they were put there instead of by a roof that doesn’t shed snow).

The snow pile in front of the house has grown to be about tall as it’s ever been.

Before the two storms this week, we had pretty much no snow left on the ground. It was warming up and felt like spring outside. This is no longer the case, but I guess spring isn’t officially here until next Tuesday. I think it won’t be here in Maine for a few more weeks.

What’s your garden looking like this week?

Welcome Winter!

December 11th, 2017

Winter has officially arrived here in Maine, we got our first meaningful amount of snow. On Saturday night and into Sunday, we got about 6 inches. They’re calling for another 6 tomorrow.

The garden is happy, it now has it’s protective layer of snow to keep things from drying out with the cold winter winds.

I’m excited about the snow, not only because it protects the garden, but also for the snowshoeing. In the winter, I go snowshoeing every day on my lunch break if I can. Getting out in the woods every day is such a treat. We’re lucky to have great trails on the property right from the house.

What’s your favorite winter activity?

Friday Favorite: Puddyprints

February 3rd, 2017

A few of the cats don’t mind the snow, I love that they go out and leave little pawprints all over the front rocks and trails through the snow.

It makes me smile when I got outside and see their little prints all about the snow.

The Last Snow?

April 27th, 2016

When we lived in Ohio, there was always at least one snow in April. So when we have snow in April here in Maine, it’s really not anything out of the ordinary.

I appreciate it for the little boost of nitrogen it gives to the growing plants. I appreciate it for its beauty. I appreciate it for the day of rest that comes along with its stillness.

When do you typically get the last snow in your area?
