Strawberry Bed Refresh

June 7th, 2018

Our strawberry patch is 6 years old now and in need of a refresh. With the redesign of the main garden, they need to be moved to make way for a walkway. Instead of digging up the plants we have to transplant, I decided to purchase new plants.

Since ‘Sparkle’ are our favorite berries, I ordered 50 crowns from Nourse Farms. They are my go-to source for asparagus, strawberries, blueberries, and other soft fruits.

Since the area of the garden where I want to put all the soft fruit is new and the soil hasn’t been amended, we decided to try some of the strawberries in raised beds. I got this cedar from the local mill, I was able to trade eggs for it. These new plants won’t produce berries this year, but we still have the old patch for that. We’re looking forward to lots of berries in years to come.

My Thoughts on ‘Mara des Bois’ Strawberries

August 31st, 2017

If you remember, this spring I decided to try ‘Mara des Bois’ strawberries as my overbearing variety. I’ve tried a few other everbearing or day neutral berries, but have never been super enthusiastic about the flavor. I kept hearing about this variety and how delicious it was, so I ordered 25 plants from Nourse Farms. They were carefully planted this spring, watered regularly, and started producing about 10-12 weeks later.

They’ve been producing ever since. If I remember to give them a watering with liquid kelp every 2 weeks they product big, beautiful berries. If I forget the berries are much smaller. It makes sense that they need extra feed to produce fruit continuously. Out of my 25 plants, 24 survived and they’re producing all kinds of runners now (which I should cut off to keep them producing berries). As far as the flavor is concerned, they are OK. To me, they don’t taste quite like the strawberries I like, they taste similar to the small yellow berries I grow. I think they have a slight taste of pineapple. Currently, we are debating whether dedicating garden space to them is worth it or if we’d rather dedicate that space to a different fruit (like raspberries).

Have you ever grow day neutral strawberries? Do you have a favorite variety?

A Yearly Favorite

June 26th, 2017

Mr Chiots is a happy camper, it’s strawberry season. We grow ‘Sparkle’, along with a few everbearing plants. This variety is our favorite, we’ve grown others in the past, but this on reigns supreme for flavor.

We’ve been making crepes, strawberry shortcake, and just eating them out of hand. It’s a short, sweet season, one that we look forward to every year. Of all the soft fruits, strawberries are probably my favorite. I would definitely choose it over all the others if I had to make a choice.

Sweet Harvest

June 25th, 2015

The strawberries are in full swing now, we harvested our first batch on Monday and enjoyed strawberry shortcake for dinner. Unfortunately Mr Chiots is traveling, which means I’m having to do the picking of the berries. It’s also a problem because he’s the big strawberry eater around here.

I picked roughly five gallons of berries yesterday and I didn’t even get the entire patch picked. Guess I’ll be busy hulling and freezing berries.

Since there are so many, I have been giving them to friends and neighbors. Hopefully we still have a week or two of harvesting before the season wanes so Mr Chiots can enjoy his favorite season.

Friday Favorite: Strawberry Season

June 20th, 2014

Last night we have our first flush of ripe berries from the garden, they were delicious!

I planted these last year, we have ‘Sparkle’ Junebearing strawberry plants and everbearing ‘Seascape’. I wanted to give overbearing a try to see how they did. Last year they didn’t produce very many berries but it was their first year. We will see how they do this year.

We enjoyed the berries on strawberry shortcake, one of our favorite summer meals. If you’d like the recipe I posted it a few years ago on this post.

Next year we should have even more strawberries, our plants produce lots of runners. I’ll be moving all the ones that come this year to a new spot in the garden. Strawberries do well if they are moved to a new location every 3 years. I plan on adding a new section in the garden before the old one is exhausted so we alway have lots of berries.
