Picking Blueberries

July 22nd, 2008

We LOVE blueberries. We eat blueberry pancakes, muffins, syrup, and cobbler all year long. We planted our own blueberry bushes this year, but they’re not producing yet. So we went to our local You-Pick farm (Spring Hill Farm in Carroll County, Ohio). We were at the farm for about an hour and we picked 27 pounds of blueberries to freeze for winter eating.

The blueberries were HUGE this year due to all the rain we’ve had this spring.

We love their blueberries, but we’re really looking forward to the day when we can pick them in our own back yard.

    Hello from Meghan and Kirk!

That is a “butt-ton” (as K called it) of blueberries!! Pray tell–how much was it to pick all of those? That looks super fun!

I think it was only like $34 to that pick that many. We had a great time. Brian listened to a podcast whilst picking, I just enjoyed the conversations of all the other pickers (very interesting!).

We forgot to take the camera to the farm or we would have a had a few photos of the actual “picking” of the blueberries.

We too went to a pick your own farm this past summer. Did you do anything to prep your blueberries to freeze? And how in the world did you pick 27 pounds in an hour? I felt we were there for ever and we only picked 2 gallons (so about maybe 13 pounds). But I guess we also were carrying a 13 month old at the time too.

Well, I always joke with Mr Chiots that I’m a migrant worker because my parents always made us work for hours in the garden when we were younger (I can outpick him 2-1). We also went fairly early in the season and early in the day, so there were a ton of blueberries on each bush, which makes it go faster. The farm we got is only open 2 days a week so that there’s time for the berries to ripen in between pickings.

I usually rinse them, then spread them out onto cookie sheets with kitchen towels and let them dry. Then I freeze them in ziplocs, I usually measure 2-3 cups per bag (depending on size of bag) and put them in the fridge first to cool, then move them to the freezer.

Too Many Daylilies?

I must admit, I'm not a huge fan of daylilies. The gardener that lived here before me however, loved them....
