Back to the Fair: Fowl & Other Small Animals

September 10th, 2008

I’ve been wanting to get pet chickens or ducks for quite a while. Perhaps next spring it will finally happen. Until then I’ll just enjoy walking through the poultry barn at the fair. There were so many different kinds of chickens. I have looked at many of them on My Pet Chicken and I always thought I’d love to get a few of these furry little bantams.

These little bantams would be great way to have chickens as pets where you’re not allowed. They look like little dogs, no one would know you had pet chickens in the yard.

Chickens really do come in all shapes and sizes and there was a great mix at the fair. There were big ones, little ones, white ones, black ones and then your normal everyday chicken looking chickens.

Next in line was the rabbit barn. Now I’m a big pet lover, so I’ve had all different kinds of pets growing up, but I have never had a rabbit (a couple guinea pigs yes). I have eaten rabbit (my dad is an avid hunter) I would LOVE to have a pet house rabbit, litter trained and running around the house. How great would that be. I’ve even looked into rescuing a rabbit from a shelter. But I just have cats for now. Checking out the rabbits in the barn was so much fun, they come in all shapes, sizes, colors and levels of fluffiness. They’re such cuties.

So any rabbit or chicken owners out there? or wannabe owners?

While I’m amazed that there are so many different types of chickens, they still creep me out!

Those are amazing pictures! I have never seen such ornate chickens. That last photo of the rabbit was funny with him laying down in his cage :)

I have a friend who raises all sorts of exotic birds: peacocks, pheasants, quails, and others. She always has peacock feathers in vases around the house because the birds molt every year. The pheasants are really beautiful…they almost look tropical because they are so colorful. Really incredible creatures.

P.S. Thank you so much for reading my blog and commenting. I really do appreciate it!

I would really like to get some chickens, but after talking to local law enforcement, I am not sure thats going to work out so well.

    :(

Is that fuzzy bunny an Angora? I would love to find an Angora rabbit. The hair is so nice to blend with wool, and to harvest the hair, you put the bunny in your lap and brush it!

I think it is an angora, but I’m not sure. They had a few more but they weren’t labeled.

Oh Mike, too bad you can’t get any. My mom’s city has similar laws. We don’t have any like that here. I’m thinking a few ducks would work. Perhaps you could get your kids involved in 4-H and you would be allowed?

Ok, this is an old post, but I’m sick on the couch with nothing to do put on husband demanded bedrest so I’m catching up. My chickens are coming next month (we live in the village limits of a rural village that is thankfully rural enough that you can keep chickens within the village limits) and I have has a house rabbit for 5 years now and he is fully litter trained and just the most amazing pet. He will actually come when he is called and when he wants some attention he will hop right in my lap no matter where I’m at and knock his head against my hand until I start giving out pets. Also, I give him a “bunny salad” every day and by far his favorite ingredient is cilantro. That works well for me because I can’t go a week without making a big batch of guacamole so I always have it on hand.

I’ve always wanted a house rabbit – how cool! Chickens are on my list, I’m trying to figure out how to have them without people noticing since they’re illegal here.
