Taking Advantage

November 4th, 2008

Mr Chiot’s and I love Election Day, none of this early voting for us, there’s just something about getting up on Election Day and casting your ballot in that little booth, taking advantage of the freedom we have in this great country.

We have a ritual: we get up drink coffee, leash up the Chiots and walk down to the voting place. It’s a nice walk, a little over 2 miles each way. This morning was especially beautiful with the warm sunny fall weather.

We live in a lake community so we vote at the clubhouse which is at the main beach, a beautiful destination.

We tied the Chiots up to a post outside and then in we went to cast our ballots.

After voting we started out leisurely walk home. Unfortunately we didn’t have as nice of a walk home. There was another dog owner not following the leash laws and her dogs ran out and one of them attacked Lucy (unfortunately she had her Halti Head Collar – 3 on so she couldn’t really fight back). So the rest of our morning was spent calling the sheriff and the vet and then running down the vet’s office for Lucy to get some staples to seal up the wounds. So 3 hours later and $50 poorer, we’ve cast our ballots.

WARNING: graphic photo coming up next.

So what did Lucy vote for?* Upholding the leash laws of course.

*Actually Lucy isn’t registered to vote, didn’t vote and no voter fraud took place this morning here at Chiot’s Run.

So did you vote early or do you like the Election Day experience like we do?

We woke up bright (thanks to daylight savings time!) and early and got to the polls this morning right before they opened. Our wait wasn’t long at all- about 45 minutes from start to finish.

Oh and POOR LUCY!! I feel so bad for her! Stupid non-law-obeying dog owners!

Oh no. That is terrible. Non leashers totally chap my hide.

I too prefer election day. I like to stand in line with my heart pounding. And, today I was more excited to darken in those ovals than ever before. I imagine we won’t have polls like we do now by the next election. I think it will be done online and by mail. So, today, I chose to stand in line with my bug, make small talk with the ancient election judges, enter the canvas-covered booth, cast my votes and walk home in the rain.

As a former dog walker, and as a former veterinary assistant, non-leashed dogs really bug me! There’s a lot of people around here that like to let their dogs run free even at very small open parks, with kids, other dogs, and cars nearby. I’ve seen far too many accidents and close calls because of unleashed dogs (and indoor/outdoor cats). A lot of the non-compliant owners take it out on the animal control officers who ticket them. But having worked directly with the ACOs, I can tell you first hand that I’ve never met nicer people, who care more about animals than they do.
Sorry about Chiots, hope she’s on the mend asap!
SJ waited in line for about 25 minutes this morning before work, I’m going shortly after the lunch rush.

I hope the call to the sheriff was to get the other person a ticket. Unleashed dogs are a menace. It’s like the owners have to friggin’ clue about what their own animals are capable of and have no respect for anyone else.

Anyway, yes, I voted this morning, 15 minutes after the polls opened. It was chilly, but the mood in line was cheerful, and it just feels so good to be taking part and having my voice heard.

Oh yeah, the call to the sheriff was for a ticket. Too bad the sheriff didn’t answer his cell. I wish I had written down her license plate number so I could make her pay the $50 bill. I’m just glad it wasn’t any worse than it was.

It was pretty cheerful at our voting place as well.

Oh, poor puppers! I’m so sorry about what happened to Lucy! Keep us posted on her recovery and the sheriff’s response.

    That’s very, very dangerous!

Here’s hoping for a fast recovery for poor Lucy! Only stood in line start to finish for 1 hour. Mark on the other hand went at 6:15 to see if he could jump in line – it was around the block – so to say the least he will be stopping on the way home!

Thanks for all your good wishes for Lucy. She’s resting peacefully (thanks to a crushed aspirin in her dinner and a few homeopathic treatments). She was sad because she didn’t get to go over to her friend Ollie’s house to watch the election results. Hopefully the swelling will go down tomorrow and she won’t look like she was in a bar fight anymore.
