America Recycles Day
Today is America Recycles Day, a day dedicated to encouraging Americans to recycle more and buy recycled products.
We recycle here at Chiot’s Run, always have. All of our plastic, glass and metal goes to the local recycling center about once a month (no curbside pick-up here). All of our organic waste goes into the compost pile as does all of our newspaper and cardboard. This is the best kind of recycling if you’re a gardener. All that stuff becomes black gold, it feeds your plants better than any fertilizer you can buy! We also try buy recycled products and try to buy products with less packaging or do without the product at all. This has made a huge dent in the amount of waste we produce. Our actual waste that goes out to the curb only takes up a grocery bag each week.
What are you doing to reduce your waste footprint?

Great post. I’m not much of a gardener, though I’d like to be. I suppose I just need to take more time. As a result I don’t compost in my garden, however our city has a compost pickup.
What has been upping our garbage count the last few months is the birth of my son. We’re adding way to many diapers to landfill. We’ve begun to transition over to cloth diapers which has helped.

Sounds like a good idea to have a recycling day, we don’t have one but in the last couple of years we were given the option of having recycling bins, this has saved us a lot of trips. Like you. we’ve recycled for many years – metal, paper, cardboard, plastic, clothes (to charity shops), glass and of course garden and vegetable waste – we do our own composting as well.
We don’t get all our recyclables collected, we still have to make periodic trips to the local recycling centre – far better than adding to the landfill burden.

I live too far out in the country to recycle everything. We tried for awhile, but sorting and hauling it into town 25 miles was too much. However, I do compost everything I can, and when we finally get recycling out here, I’m on it. Cute photo, BTW.~~Dee
