Garden Harvest Spreadsheet

February 23rd, 2009

I finally finished my garden harvest spreadsheet template, so I’m ready for the Garden Harvest Challenge. Many of you expressed interest in the file, so I am adding it to my blog for you to download. I saved them as templates to make it easy
large-spreadsheet
I have a Numbers file for Mac users and an Excel file for you poor Windows users. The Numbers file is much prettier of course, but they both work wonderfully. The Excel file has 3 tabs, one for the input table, one for the total harvest table, and one for the bar graph (I’m not as familiar with Excel as I used to be so it probably could be better, feel free to make any changes to improve it). The Numbers file has all of the tables & graphs on the same sheet. When you enter your total harvest in the first table it will update the amount in the second table and include the totals on the bar graph. You do have to manually change the crop titles on both tables, but that’s easy. If anyone has any great additions to the file let me know (particularly the Excel file).

So fellow Freedom Gardeners, let’s see how much of a dent we can put in the million pound goal!

I have to admit this is a far cry from the file I used last year. I just kept track of my tomato harvest by type last year, which I may do again this year in a separate garden harvest file. I’ll keep you up to date every month with my harvest tally, I can’t wait to see how well all of you do this year with your freedom gardens.

How are you keeping track of your harvests?

I made an excel spreadsheet too, but not as nice of a one as yours. It is all on one page with no graphs. Plus I have a little harvest tally on my sidebar that I’m hoping to update every week once it is actually harvest time. That may be a while since the garden is still under snow. My goal is not just to keep track of my harvest, but also what it is worth and what I spend, so I’ll know what I’m saving.

I am keeping track of it with your spreadsheet now. :)

    Gotta buy a scale though.

I’m thinking of hanging a fish scale right out in my garden so I can weigh the produce before I hand it over the fence to a neighbor or consume it myself right there on the spot. Last year a lot of stuff never did get weighed, because it never got as far as the kitchen scale. I also have an Individual Plant Analysis card file, and a blog of what is growing in my garden to keep track of each crop, along with a daily journal for jotting things down so I don’t forget to enter them in the card file and the blog.

Well. Did SOMEBODY get a degree in accounting, hmmm? Now who could THAT be? :-)

I don’t keep track of my harvest–I just try to keep UP with my harvest.

Oh yes, a scale is a necessary tool. I have the Escali Primo Digital Multifunctional Scale and I like it. I would love to find an old grocery store scale to hang in my garage, but I don’t know if that will happen. This is the one I use for bread and all my cooking and for garden harvests as well.

Thanks Susy! Very nice of you. I am for sure going to use it, my projection is that my Italian prune tree will be the most prolific thing in my garden, unless we get a late frost.

Italian Prunes, yum. I think that my tomatoes will probably be my most prolific producers, although the foraged berries from around the area will come in a close second I think.

Last year I weighted most things and updated it on my blog’s side bar. I also counted each tomato and updated that on my side bar. It was pretty tough to keep on top of it so I am not sure if I will do it this year. Although if I don’t do it again then I wouldn’t know if I beat last years harvest, decisions decisions.

Thank you! I was hoping that you would post the method, and now you’ve posted the spread sheets themselves… (oh, another Mac user here – so much better, lol). How do I track my harvest? Well, I plan to do so this summer, I think in much the same way as you described. I think its especially important for me now, starting out, so I have some sort of base line and can learn what to do next year in terms of how much I need and how much I can supply for myself…

I played around with your template in numbers, and have added linked it to the garden journal I had been working on. It is available via my blog:

Feel free to further edit or improve as seen fit. Thanks again.

I have downloaded the excell spreadsheet and love the look of it, the only thing I would love to see is that on the second tab, with the total harvest, it would be great if there could be a box at the bottom, or on the third spreadsheet that adds up the total amount, rather than just total per item. Does that make sense?

Hannah: You can total up that column of total harvest very easily. All you have to do is click on the cell at the bottom of the column (the one after the last item in your list) and then click on the Sum button on the toolbar at the top (the one with the Greek E (sigma) on it). Or you can put this formula in that cell =SUM(B2:B23)
