Favorite Gardening Magazines

March 2nd, 2009

I love magazines. They’re the perfect reading material for those of us that like to read in bits and pieces throughout the day. I typically read one article while eating breakfast, one at lunch, one with my afternoon coffee and perhaps another in the evening. I only have one subscription to a garden magazine; Organic Gardening. It’s a great magazines filled with lots of good information, I love reading through this magazine and usually I finish the day I get it. I have all of my back issues saved and every so often I leaf through them.

I do check a lot of other magazines out of the library to read (I’m thrifty like that). Saturday when I went to the library they had a bunch in, so I filled my weekend with gardening magazines. I always get inspired by the photos I see and get excited about getting out and trying a few new things in my gardens.

I really love Mother Earth News (their website is equally informative), it’s packed full of great articles and ideas that I can incorporate here at Chiot’s Run. Better Homes and Gardens magazines are always lovely to look at, although with their professionally designed gardens they usually leave my gardens feeling a tad inadequate. I do love flipping through all of them learning about new plants and garden tools.

So will I be getting a subscription to any of these any time soon? Probably not, I don’t mind waiting to get them from the local library. Although I do hate it when I get one that someone has torn something out of – GRRRRRR.

Do you have a favorite garden magazine? Or another kind of magazine that you would recommend?

No fav gardening mag, as I’m still really new to this, but I *do* love mags in general – so relaxing and easy to just page through, start and stop at any point… especially after a long day or to unwind. Out of all the gardening mags you read, is there one you’d particularly recommend? I’d guess maybe the one you subscribe to, Organic Gardening? Or is there another you find fun or informative?

I used to get Organic Gardening, oh maybe a decade or two ago (boy that makes me sound old). I don’t get them anymore. Nowadays I just read blogs for inspiration.

I like American Bee Journal and Family Handyman. Neither are really gardening specific, though if you are a gardener, you may enjoy either.

Not a big magazine guy, but Paul over at apaetoday.blogspot.com has turned me on to Grit.

Mother Earth does have a pretty informative website, and I do have a subscription to the magazine along with 2 others, Backwoods Home and Countryside (our favorite). I have the first 50 or so issues of Mother earth…those are the really good ones if you can ever get your hands on them. No cell phone or cable tv, but we do splurge when it comes to seeds and reading materials.

I currently get Mother Earth News, Organic Gardening and Sunset. Although Sunset isn’t really just a gardening mag per se, I absolutely love it! Some of my absolute favorite food recipes have come from that magazine!

I read the Organic Gardening at the library, I really like that magazine. The only problem is so does many others, you can hardly ever find any issues from the current year. I should really subscribe one of these days.

I agree Dan. I keep all of my old Organic Gardening and leaf through them every now and then. They have such great articles.

It’s really not that expensive $23.94 for 2 years. https://secure.rodale.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/OaeEntryPage?storeId=10057&keycode=I81W0001&mktOfferId=OGD11161

I also used to subscribe to Garden Gate Magazine, and it is good, but I prefer Organic Gardening because it is more directed towards growing vegetables and it teaches organic methods.

My MIL gets Garden Gate and I love to look through all her copes for landscaping ideas. They always have such gorgeous plants in there!

Hmm, magazines. Hehe, I never thought about actually reading a gardening magazine. My folks got Sunset years ago, and Better Homes, but that was 20+ years ago. I’ll have to look into that.

    Thanks!

Sinfonian – you would love Mother Earth News I think and Organic Gardening. Check your local library for them and give them a read, I think you’ll be glad you did.

Sherri – Sunset, I think I’ve seen that magazine before but I’ll have to see if the library has it.

I don’t have a subscription to any gardening magazines, but I’m ecstatic anytime an “Organic Gardening” or “Mother Earth News” crosses my path.
