The Daffodils are Here

March 30th, 2009

I’ve been watching the daffodils on my front hillside for the past couple weeks waiting for the blooms to emerge. This is what they looked like on March 9th.

Then on March 18th you could start seeing evidence of the blooms.

Finally a few days ago they were almost out.

It’s always nice to see these sunny flowers peeking out, it’s a sure sign that spring is here. I’m not sure what kind they are, I inherited these daffodils from the previous owners of the house. I suspect that they’re the wild ones that grow here in Ohio, they bloom at the same time and look very similar.

This fall I’m hoping to add more daffodils to my gardens. They’re a great bulb because they grow well in my soil and they’re deer & rodent proof. I’ll probably purchase mine from Old House Gardens, they specialize in heirloom bulbs.

Are there daffodils in your gardens? Any other spring bulbs blooming now?

What progress, just in a short month :-) That’s one of the best things about photographs I think, having that ability to track growth and marvel at it day by day in memory. I haven’t planted bulbs or flowers, I’m still figuring out veg gardening! But certain flowers do make me smile. I love tulips and sunflowers (along with daisies and the others in the same sunflower-type “family”)… Maybe next year I’ll take the plunge with tulips; seeing the color would brighten my day I’m sure, especially early in the spring season.

I agree. I love to take photos because it shows you how the plants are growing. I also like to take photos of project because it helps me to see how far along I am.

I like bulbs because they’re so easy, plant and they’ll keep giving you blooms for quite a while. If you do tulips make sure to buy the kind that return, it’s disappointing to get only leaves in later years!

Oh yay for you and your daffodils! I think I have a few more days, even weeks before mine bloom. Last fall I tried planting the daffodils and tulips in a pattern to maximize the progression of blooms. I’m curious to see if it looks totally dorky or totally cool

You’ll have to put up some photos. That’s a very interesting way to plant them.

My daffodils aren’t blooming yet. Last year they never bloomed :< I’m hoping it was just the fall drought that cause that. Last fall we got plenty of rain so I’ve got my fingers crossed.

No daffodils here :( Every year I think I’ll add them, then get side-tracked with other garden dreams. Maybe this year??

I know what you mean, I didn’t plant any bulbs last year. Usually I plant a few hundred each fall. We’ll see how many of my tulips return.

Why, yes. Yes I do! In fact, this is the first spring in 12 years that I’ve been home in time to see my daffodils bloom.

I have enjoyed your blog so much, I dedicated my first bouquet to you.

I know, it was snowing last night when we went to bed. There was only a slight accumulation this morning when we got up. But it’s supposed to be in the 20’s tonight – BRRRR.

I have loads of daffodils because the squirrels don’t eat them. I have underplanted about 100 feet of our hedge with them and have about 10 or so clumps in the borders around the yard. Your lucky to have blooming Daf’s already, I am still waiting on all of mine, even the small yellow ones that usually bloom really fast.

I had a few bulbs coming up…I’m thinking they’re tulips. A few of them are coming up in areas where my hubby ripped up the landscaping last fall in preparation of it’s transition into food growing space this year. It’s kind of comical to see them where you least expect them!

I think daffodils are the happiest of flowers. They seem to bring a smile to the face and arrive just when we most need to see something that looks sunny and bright.
