Around the Gardens
I spent yesterday evening working in the garden. It was the perfect night, cool and breezy and the sunset was beautiful. I love working outside as the sun is setting, it’s always so peaceful and the light is lovely. I had my camera by my side and I spent more time snapping photos than weeding or watering as I should have been. So I thought I’d just share some photos of my gardens as they currently look.
Arugula blooming and spilling out of it’s raised bed.
I was trying to take some photos of my catmint plant, which the bumblebees love. I caught this one in mid-flight, not quite in focus, but I still love it.
I really like that chives bloom for so long.
Time to harvest this chamomile for winter teas.
The first bloom on my dark pink peony, it’s hiding on the back side of the fence.
We had a bit of rain shower on Saturday and the peonies always end up on the ground, I guess they need better drainage.
Lucy also enjoyed the evening in the garden.
I love it when the sun shines on the peas and you can see the little peas in the pod.
Things are getting a little crowded in the front flowerbed. I think it’s time to divide some perennials.
The potatoes seem to grow 6 inches each day!
I love the sunlight at this time of night, perfect!
What’s your favorite time of the day to work in the garden?

I love to put in an hour or two of work in the garden after dinner. It’s cooler, and I like to avoid working in direct sun. And like you said – that light quality is beautiful.

I would love to work at sunset, since that is my favorite time too. However, the mosquitos think my going outside is a call to dinner and at sunset, if I stayed out my dessicated remains would be found by neighbors at some point. ::sigh::
Your garden looks lovely! Very vigorous and full of life.
I’m curious about your potato beds there. Can you tell me what your spacing is and how you’re stacking and so on? How big are the boxes, etc? I’m looking at a change up for next year since the container way is getting me far fewer potatoes than it should I think with the plants 2 feet tall above it, I’m surely missing some potential.

I’ll be talking about my potatoes tomorrow.
Fortunately we don’t have too many mosquitoes here, thanks to all the bats & birds.

Morning. I like to do all my hard, dirty work in the morning. That way, when I’m done, I’m done for the day and can shower and put on non-work clothes for the rest of the day.

It depends upon the season. In the spring I love to work in the afternoon because the sun is so welcome. Now I go out twice a day. Once in the early morning when things are still and the insects haven’t woken up. The other time is the afternoon in the sun. I don’t do much in the sun since it is starting to heat up and I’m a heat wimp, but it is nice to see the bees and dragonflies flitting around the garden. So my favorite time to work is the morning, but my favorite time to experience the garden is the afternoon.

Gorgeous photographs! I feel like I’m standing right in your garden.
It’s sometimes windy in the afternoon where I live, so I guess I’d have to say early morning is my favorite time in the garden. It’s still and quiet. Nobody but me, my dog and my cup of coffee.
You have a lovely blog. May I add you to my blogroll?

Your photos are just marvellous! Oh, they are so beautiful! I especially love the pea photo. I prefer the evening too, when the blackbirds are singing and everything seems so thoughtful. It’s the time to fall totally in love with your garden.

How beautiful your garden is! I love to garden in spring around 2:00. I take out my Sweetie [cat] Madeline on her leash and we have a great time. I tending to the garden, weeding and seeding or planting and Madeline chasing bugs, eating grass out of her garden pot or taking in the fresh air. She is such a delight.
I am starting to garden with many native plants [California]. Does anyone else use their natives in the gardens?
to Lynn's comment
I try to use a lot of natives and drought resistant plants. So far all the natives seem to be doing well.

Morning. I love to be out there as the day is starting, it just calms me and energizes me all at the same time and helps me get through my day. Seeing the plants and watching them grow each day reminds me that there is always something positive to find, as long as I look for it.

I love to work early in the morning…before people nearby seem to be up and making noise. I love how the sun shines across the rows and I love the dew on the spider webs. Really, though, I like to be in the garden about any time!

[…] Here at Chiot’s Run we don’t see a ton of sunrises and sunsets because we’re surrounded on 3 sides by very tall old trees. Down from the house we have a lake and we always notice the sunset down there when we’re on walks or driving by. In the winter we can see the sunrise and sunset because there are no leaves on the trees, that’s one of the things I really love about winter. They’re spectacular with the big trees silhouetted against the colorful sky. Sometimes the sunrise/sunset can really change the feel of a location. Last spring we went to Gettysburg and we happened to arrive right before sunset. It really helped make the visit even more moving that any of our previous visits. My favorite time to work in the garden is right before sunset. There’s something so wonderful about the light at that time of the evening. You can almost feel the plants and insects winding down for an overnight rest. I enjoy this time of the evening so much I have a hard time getting work done, the light is perfect for photos so I find myself out with my camera instead of out with the trowel (here’s one such evening).
