Planting Pole Beans
This is my first year growing a lot of things, like beans. I’m growing bush beans (2 kinds) and pole beans (2 kinds). My beets aren’t quite ready to harvest yet, although if whatever varmint keeps getting into them and eating them keeps it up, I’ll be pickling baby beets. My beet bed is where the bush beans will be going, but I really didn’t have a place for the pole beans. I have a trellis, but it’s currently covered in peas, clematis, hops and soon birdhouse gourds as well.
So I decided to grow my pole beans in a pot with a trellis, you can see the two pots there with the black trellises in them. They should be really beautiful in those pots filling them up quickly. I’m not sure where the pots will go yet, but they’ll look lovely wherever I put them. (this is my pot holding area, some of these will be moved to other locations throughout the gardens)
Several days ago I wrapped the seeds in a wet rag and let them sit overnight. By the next morning they had all started to germinate, so into the pots they went. I planted them the day before yesterday and this morning I noticed the first sprout starting to pop up. By the end of the day it was standing tall and starting to unfurl it’s first set of leaves.
I’m growing Kentucky Wonder Pole Beans and Dragon Tongue beans. Hopefully in a week or two I’ll be starting the bush beans in the raised bed. I’m hoping for a good bean crop this year for canning, we’ll see if the local wildlife finds them as tasty as the peas.
What kinds of beans do you grow?

No beans for me, but I like the idea of using pots and trellis for support as you showed. Plus, they can be moved to the optimum location for sun, etc.

I grow Chinese Red Noodle bean, Kentucky Wonder pole and usually bush beans too. This year I’m skipping most of the bush beans since I never really got enough to can anyway from my little patch. Instead I’m experimenting with kidney beans to see what the yield is.

Just a standard green bush bean. We grew purple pole beans and lima beans last year. I find the climbing beans to be a total pain to harvest–I prefer the bush varieties.

This is my first year attempting to grow any type of bean. I am growing Blue Lake bush beans and Medinah bush beans.

I am behing in getting my beans in…I should do it in the next few days. I am busy making the trellis structure. I am doing baby limas and Big Mama limas (the latter from Burpee).

I am growing some Blue Lake Bush Beans. I wanted some Scarlet Runners, but once again they just don’t like my soil or something about their microclimate.
Last year I planted 11 Scarlet Runners. Two came up and I got a grand total of 5 beans. Not pods mind you, but beans. At that rate…. :)

I grew 2 ft long Kentucky Wonders at our river camp along the Ohio River way back when. Yesterday we planted Scarlet Runners, heirloom Crowder peas and heirloom October beans. The two heirlooms came from a garden friend who’s family has been growing the beans for over 40 years one generation at a time.

I love growing beans! I like French Dwarf Beans the most – this year, we are growing Kenyan Bean and also Purple Teepee which are dark purple and turn green whilst cooking.

I am having bean problems this year. I planted kentucky blue poles, purple podded poles, vermont cranberry beans & dragon tongue beans. The only ones that have germinated in over 2 weeks are the dragon tongue beans. I think I will try your pre-sprouting route tonight. I will have some seed for that double columbine I photoed available soon if you would like to do a swap for the yellow foxglove seed??

It seems to work for me. I’ve heard beans can be difficult if it’s too wet.

I’m also doing my beans in pots with trellises. I’m trying scarlet runner, just because I think they are so pretty!

We grow bush beans…tenderettes to be exact. We also grow black beans in the dried bean category too…they look very similar growing…but not in taste!

I love your blog!
I am growing scarlet runner beans for the hummingbirds mostly but also because I love the dried beans. So beautiful. I’m doing the kentucky blue poles too. Last year tried the purple peacock beans and they were a gorgeous purple color that changed to green when steamed.
Best of luck with your beans.

Your garden looks terrific!~ I’ve never grown beans, I really just started my garden this year. I already want to expand! I love that you’ve got a container garden going…I’m growing squash in a container with morning glories going up the trellis. We’ll see if it becomes the ‘artistic wonder’ I hope it will be ;)
nice to meet you!~

We have 4 sets of teepees just full of Kentucky Wonder pole beans, but not a bloom in sight. My son-in-law has been picking bush beans for 2 weeks. Are they late bloomers, or have we done something wrong? I’d love some advice.
Nice site, I have enjoyed reading what others are growing and which ones they like best. We are in WV, near Huntington, but lived in Louisiana for almost 20 years and grew pole peas there, just loved them and really missing having those bags in the freezer with a few small pods snapped with them. Yummy
