The Joys of Summer

July 13th, 2009

One of the great joys of summer is stopping at a little ice cream place on the way home. I grew up in a ice cream loving family, we found ourselves frequently stopping for ice cream at little shops.

Yesterday we went to the local greenhouse with some friends and we met my parents there. My parents decided to come to our house for a visit afterward to see what the gardens looked like, so we took the scenic route home through the little town of New Baltimore.

We stopped by this great little ice cream place that we love. The sizes of the cones are outrageous as well, this is a large with the top scoop almost gone already! They say if you get the jumbo they have to turn it sideways to get it out the window.

They have so many different flavors of ice cream and it’s all made in house.

Their raspberry ice cream is really fantastic (this is what we had) and our friend Missy said their chocolate was really good as well.

My dad & mom went for old-fashioned vanilla, always a safe bet.

This little ice cream is stand is one of the best around so we find ourselves there a few times during the summer.

Do you have a favorite little local ice cream shop you visit?

Black walnut sounds very interesting. I like ginger flavoured ice cream, very refreshing.

Ooooo Rasberry sounds REALLY good. We have a little place here called Scoops – I go for the chocolate/peanut butter – although, the ice cream is not homemade there :(
Charlie and I make our own a couple times a summer – can’t beat it!

Every so often while driving through a particular little town in are neck of the woods my wife makes us stop so she can indulge in a vanilla ice cream cone. The same one that is in your parents hand. Those are some big ice creams. :)

Classic! I hate when the wives make us do terrible things!

Around here it’s “Mr Chiots makes us stop”

Although yesterday it was my dad that wanted to stop, we just chose the place.

I think two scoops are about all I could manage – but boy those look good! I love good icecream. We used to have a holdover fifties style icecream/soda shop in my neighborhood when I was growing up in Spokane Washington – it was called “Doyles” and they also had a whole wall of penny candy (nickel actually) too. It was the favorite destination of the kids in my neighborhood to bike to there and have some icecream and stock up on some interesting candy. I am sure it is long gone now – but definitely good summertime memories.

Mr Chiots and I split the large. I could never finish more than a small I’m sure.

We come and go on ice cream nowadays. I dipped ice cream a lot in high school and I have lost my taste for it…isn’t that a crime? Maybe I should have applied for workman’s comp!

Whenever I can I make the trip to Ivanhoe’s in Upland, Indiana. Used to go there as a kid for special treats.

    Man, I miss that place!

…Now THAT is my kinda ice cream shop! :o)

…Unfortunately in our small town we don’t have an ice cream shop so we have to drive in a ways to have some and it is from a fast food chain so it really isn’t much of a treat. Absolutely nothing like what you have there – that is phenomenal!

…It isn’t even noon here yet and now I want some ice cream! :o)

    …Blessings…

We’ve been making a lot of homemade ice cream as well. Sometimes we use the small electric maker and sometimes we get out the old White Mountain hand crank machine and make a big batch.
