July Harvest Totals

August 1st, 2009

July has come and gone and the garden harvest is finally starting to add up nicely (yesterday I picked over 10 pounds of stuff). August should be the best month with the tomatoes being in full force by then.
Weighing_tomatoes
I’ve been dutifully weighing just about everything I harvest, although I’m sure I’ve missed a few things here and there. Keeping track is such a great way to know how much a difference you’re making in your diet (and your pocketbook)!

So what came from the garden this month?
10.3 lbs of wild black raspberries
8.5 lbs of tomatoes
7.5 lbs of cucumbers (all nicely tucked away in pickle form)
7.5 lbs of garlic (all drying in the attic)
4 lbs of zucchini
.5 lbs of peppers (I have a bunch on the plants I’m allowing to ripen so I can can roasted red peppers)
.5 lbs of peas (the last of them)
3 ozs of herbs

What have you harvested from you garden this July? (post your blog link if you blog it)

My garden is small this year and a lot got drowned by all the rain, but so far I’ve harvested lots of garlic, basil, and rosemary (some drying, some eaten fresh), some peppers and eggplant. I’m jealous of your wild raspberries!

We’ve been drowning in the rain the last couple weeks like Mangochild. The cucumbers are about done and the tomatoes are producing but not ripening. No sun. Some seem to rotting on the vine. I just can’t seem to convince the weather to cooperate!

Okay I had to go and update (thanks again for the spreadsheet!) I’m impressed by your blackberries! We always forget to weigh berries as we eat them all by the time they are cleaned an in the kitchen.

So we have 47.8 pounds for July! 10+ of that is garlic, and there are some oversized zucchini adding to that total too! We’re getting to the point too where I make notes about how many pounds per day–once the tomatoes really come in it feels pretty gratifying!

I am a little less serious about weighing everything this summer, but I do enjoy it, and it makes great records to look back on. I like that I can predict when I can start to expect enough produce for canning, etc.

You beat me to it….this was my blog post for today (only yours has much better photos than mine will :)

Now I just need to go get my calender and figure out the totals…and with my scribbling, that may take awhile!

That’s why I made the spreadsheet. Last year I scribbled it on little notes here and there and lost a lot of them.

My blog post on this is coming up – So far we’ve had lots of green beans, peas, beets, beet greens, carrots, cucumbers, and kale. We’ve had a bit of broccoli, too, but I’ve been kind of disappointed in our harvest. In spite of picking tomato varieties that are supposed to be well suited to our cooler climate in the Midwest I haven’t picked a single tomato yet. We did have some local cherry tomatoes from a local organic farm which should help tide us over, but I must say this summer has left me very disappointed (temperatures have often been double digit below the normal).

I’ve been disappointed in my broccoli this year as well. I tried 2 new kinds and neither of them have formed heads yet. I may just rip them out and plant new.

So far I have harvested Yellow Crookneck, Patty Pan, Eggplant, a few tomatoes, scallions, Kentucky Wonders, various lettuces and herbs. Not a lot but enough to have wonderful sides and salads for the past week.

Gorgeous tomatoes! In fact, everything looks divine. Those pickles…why can I never resist pickles?

Anyway, good for you on the tracking note. I’ve been tracking my harvests (and costs) this year, as well, to see how much we really reap from this garden of mine and I’m totally sold. (As if I wasn’t before)

So far, I’ve taken down about 100 lbs of produce – and the tomatoes are still full.

Good luck for your August harvests!
