Gardening Holidays: Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day

August 8th, 2009

Today is Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbors’ Porch Day – HOW FUN. I happened up on these great beauties for free at our local bee supply shop. We’ve been keeping up with ours, so this gave me the perfect fodder to celebrate this holiday!

Mr Chiots ran in to town yesterday afternoon (since I needed photos for today, we celebrated a day early). He put them on our friend’s porch, right on the porch swing.

Unfortunately he was caught in the act. Ollie, their crazy little dog wanted to keep the zucchini (I’m sure he thought it was a dog toy).

In the end the zucchini is back at our house (our friend’s don’t appreciate zucchini as much as we do). I sauteed it last night and it’s marinading in a balsamic vinaigrette in the fridge. We’ll enjoy it as a side dish, on pizza, or on a sandwich.

Are you going to celebrate this fantastic holiday (if so, snap a photo, put it on your blog, and link to it in the comments)?

I had never ever heard of this! It’s too funny. Shame we don’t have any zucchini growing here at the moment.

I had no idea today was Sneak Some Zucchini On Your Neighbor’s Porch Day! I was at my neighbor’s house last night begging for any left-over zucchini, so I would have enough to make relish. Our zucchini plants did not produce enough this year, and I am so disappointed. I still want to make zucchini marmalade, zucchini chutney, zucchini lasagna…and the list goes on. So…to my neighbors…your zucchinis are welcome here.

OOOOO, I’d love to have your recipe for zucchini relish. I know of a few places around that are offering free big zukes to anyone who wants them.

Candy e-mailed me the recipe, I thought I’d add it here in case anyone is interested.

        Hot Dog Relish

This is a sweet version that is terrific on grilled Cheddar cheese
        sandwiches —

        2 C distilled white vinegar
        2 C sugar
        4.5 t salt
1.5 t freshly ground black pepper
        1.5 t ground cinnamon
        3/4 t ground cloves
        9 C finely chopped zucchini.
        4 small onions, finely chopped.
2 apples, peeled and finely chopped.
        2 green tomatoes, finely chopped.

        1. In a large noncreative kettle, combine the vinegar, sugar, salt, pepper, cinnamon, and cloves. Bring to a boil. Add the zucchini, onions, apples, and green tomatoes. Simmer uncovered, stirring frequently, until thick, about 30 minutes.

        2. Pack the relish into four clean, hot 1-pint jars, leaving 1/2 inch of headroom. Using a plastic or wooden spatula, remove air bubbles. Wipe the rim with a clean cloth and seal.

        3. Process in a boiling-water bath according to your altitude.

        4. Let cool undisturbed for 12 hours. Store in a cool, dry place. Allow 6 weeks for the full flavors to develop.

That’s funny! Here, however, my yellow squash are the only plants that survived transplanting, and since I eat them small in salads, they don’t become as prolific.

On the other hand, I’ve been giving away cucumber (Straight Eight) like crazy. I have 10 plants that are yielding a lot more than we can consume. Maybe I should start “Sneak Some Cucumber onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day”. :o)

They’re in the same family, so I think they count. Perhaps we should rename: Sneak some Cucubits onto your Neighbors Porch, that would cover most of the prolific veggies.

We are keeping up with the zucchini so there is really none ot spare. It’s a cute idea though and the dog looks like quite a little character.

I wish I had been home so I could take part in this glorious holiday/day :-) What fun it is. My mother found a huge zucchini on her desk at work on the 8th, and while she suspects which coworker was celebrating the day, the donor managed the deed unseen. It was delicious.
