I’m glad I’m living in the time I’m living, I don’t mind being able to get things like onions whenever I need them or lemons all year long. I do however only eat certain things in season. My favorite in season thing right now – tomatoes; fresh, vine-ripened tomatoes of all shapes and sizes. I eat them fresh every chance I get, I have to get my fill of fresh tomatoes during these couple months since the supermarket varieties in the off-season are just a mere shadow of a real tomato.

    Over here in New Zealand I’m eagerly waiting for Asparagus! It is early Springtime and those luscious spears of goodness will soon be available.

    My place isn’t suitable for growing it so I buy. The season lasts until just after Christmas so you know what I’ll have on the table come Christmas Day!

      I too love asparagus! I just put in a few plants this spring, so in a few years I should be harvesting asparagus of my own.

    Peaches. The peaches are on the tail end, its that time of year when the summer and fall fruits/veg are overlapping. We’re off to the orchard later today and I hear that they have peaches, apples, pears, and some plums all at the same time. But I’m still finding the peaches delicious.

    What’s interesting is that just about the time I’m all “peach-ed out” is the time when the disappear from the seasonal rotation and the fall apples and pears arrive to take their place. If the peach season *had* gone on longer, no matter how much I love them, they’d have lost their spark for me. And likewise, when the summer veg of zucchini, eggplant, beans, etc. are through, the fall squashes, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, etc. are ready for the table. That’s one of the things I love about eating seasonally – things seem to change when they need to, cycling through the year.

      I love peaches as well, but since we had a hard freeze in the spring there weren’t as many peaches around here this year. I got a few, but not as many as I would have liked.

    Apple season just started here in Washington..right now its Galas! As much as I love fresh apples I also love the wild blackberries that are…seriously…everywhere! Kim

    Hmmm… such hard choices. Right now we have sweet corn wrapping up, tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers also on the tail end of their seasonal appearance. I love all of these so I will be sad to see their season conclude. The green beans (pole, bush, and runners) are still going strong but I am about ready for their season to wrap up as I am pretty much “beaned out”. ;)

    While I am sad to see some of the crops hit the end of their season, right behind them is the next group to take center stage in the garden – broccoli, brussel sprouts, fall lettuces and spinach, cabbages, parsnips, and the winter squashes and pumpkins.

    Eating in season is very rewarding and I am always about ready for the next items when the current ones are getting wrapped up. However, by the time it is their season again … I am literally hungering for their arrival once again.

    My favorite right now has to be sweet corn. But I am experimenting with lots of new recipies this year and I am having a lot of fun with sweet red peppers. Gee I see a trend here…sweet!

    I love Jessica Prentice’s seasonal take/rhythm. It is difficult to wrap my head around going with a true seasonal rotation (or local for that matter – no lemons and oranges around these parts). I do have to agree on the tomatoes, though. Those orange-y red softball size things at the store are *not* a tomato.

    Peppers. I just picked a peck of pickled peppers to add to my canned tomatoes, fresh garlic, and fresh onion to make some salsa. Viva!

    Anything ripe and picked fresh works for me! I just ate a tomato that I had picked yesterday. A few went into a little bowl of salsa for lunch and more will join our dinner with some pesto, but the joy of a plain tomato is a delight for this gardener.

    Peaches! Warm from the sun, right off the tree; eaten bending over to keep from dripping juice down the front of my shirt. I only get peaches maybe every four or five years due to Spring frosts. But this year I am just finishing up the Elbertas (dehydrated some of those) and am waiting for my mystery tree peaches (sprouted from a seed a squirrel must have buried under the woodpile) to get ripe. I’m hoping for enough of those to can a batch of peach salsa too.

    Apples. I used to eat apples every day. Like you, I enjoy being able to get some things out of season but for other things, I wait. Apples are one of the things I “trained” myself to wait for.
