Harvesting the 3 Sisters Garden

October 6th, 2009

It was a beautiful day yesterday so I decided to go to my mom’s yesterday to harvest my 3 sisters garden. The corn has been drying on the stalks for a few weeks now and I figured I’d better pick it before the next rain storm comes.

I picked all the corn and some of the beans that were growing up the corn stalks. I haven’t weighed or counted the corn yet, so I can’t tell you how much I got. I think I’ll wait and weigh it when it’s dry.

I also harvested some of the squash that was growing through the corn, the pumpkins I picked last week were also growing around the corn.

Lucy had a great time, she loves “Goin’ to Gramma’s”. She got to bask in the sun while I was harvesting and she got to stick her head out the window on the car ride! You just can’t get any better than sunny with a high of 63 for gardening, I would rate it as the perfect gardening day!

What’s your favorite kind of gardening weather?

Around 60 degrees and cloudy. That way I don’t sweat so much and I don’t have to worry about burning my Irish skin.

It depends upon what I’m doing in the garden. If I’m digging I like the 50s because I get pretty hot. If I’m just puttering around I like the high 60s and low 70s. I always like it sunny with no humidity. If it is sunny I want to be outside so I’m more likely to stay out and get something done.

Ah, low humidity, something I like as well but we rarely have in Ohio in the summer. It’s better in the fall for sure.

It looks like you reaped a beautiful harvest from your three sisters’ garden! Those beans look gorgeous (I have a weakness for beautiful beans.)

I like low to mid 60s for more heavy duty garden work. Mid 70s for the little stuff. Granted I am pregnant so lately I like it a little cooler then those numbers still for just about everything. This weekend it is suppose to be in the high 50s which I think will be perfect for raking leaves and getting my beds ready for Winter.

Perfect weather indeed. I’m hoping to get a lot of garden chores finished up this week/weekend!

I love when I start out in a sweatshirt but take it off about halfway thru digging up the old and planting the new. I just can’t make myself do a whole lot when it’s blazingly hot outside. Our weather has been in the 100’s till this week and suddenly it’s 70 degrees, so of course now we’re behind on the fall garden. You’d think I’d learn :)

RIGHT NOW! The hellish heat is gone and we can work comfortably in the garden. It’s a mixed blessing though. The days are shorter so we don’t get as many work hours. We’ve been working so much that our aching bodies are trying to tell us to slow down. Fall is a wonderful time of year.

This must be what everyone else’s summer is like.

It is a beautiful season to be in the garden. Even though we’ve had our first frost, I love being out there with the rattling husks of the Three Sisters and the bent heads of the sunflowers. If we have to say goodbye to it all, at least we have the best time of year to perform our farewells.

    What are those amazing-looking peppers?
