A Day Off
Mr Chiots and I have the day off; well, kind of. Usually we’re working all day on Saturdays and I often don’t get time to make it to the farmer’s market. But today we don’t have to be at a shoot until early afternoon. I’m going to enjoy my day off by getting up and heading down to the farmer’s market. It’s much smaller this time of year with fewer vendors, fewer vegetables and fewer shoppers. There are still lots of wonderful things to see, the colors are so fantastic. The summer’s bright red tomatoes and green bell peppers have been replaced the mellow colors of indian corn and deep orange pumpkins.
I think one of my favorite fall seasonal things at the market are the pumpkins. They just scream fall every time I see them. I can just see the bowls of steaming pumpkin soup, the chilled pumpkin pies and the delicious pumpkin muffins coming out of the oven. Mr Chiots would probably choose apples as his favorite fall item, he’s a big fan of apple pies, apple crisp and pretty much anything that involved apples and sugar.
What’s your favorite seasonal fall item?

Nice photos, especially of the apples!
All of those pumpkin foods sound delicious…the pumpkin soup in particular!

The squashes! I absolutely love winter squash. Butternut has got to be my favorite.
We went to a huge pumpkin festival here last week, and bought a buttercup, which we’ve never had before, and a small baking pumpkin, which we turned into the most delicious bread.

I do love trying different kinds of squash. They all taste slightly similar and yet remarkably different. Butternut is one of my faves as well, we enjoy butternut soup all winter long!

I love looking at a great arrangemnet of pumpkins and winter squash – but my favorite flavor of fall is definitely apples – particularly the combination of apples and cinnamon.

We lived in New York for 2 years when I was in the second grade and that was the last time I had a decent McIntosh apple!
I am officially jealous:)

They’re quite tasty aren’t they! I buy a different kind of apple every week from Mr Vincent. He’s an old fellow that grows all kinds of apples that you can’t buy at the grocery. He grows a lot of old heirlooms and he’ll recommend a perfect kind of what you plan on doing with it. He sure knows his stuff. I was telling Mr Chiots that it’s kind of sad to see this kind of knowledge not being passed down to another generation.

Autumn brings about a thirst in my mouth can be quenched by nothing less than hot apple cider made from Honeycrisp apples! I love it.

Oh yes, cider. We’ve been enjoying cider from our local cider press. I particularly like it mulled with all kinds of spices and served warm on these chilly October evenings!
